Default Laptop switches off

I have an Acer laptop that every now and again switches off and restarts by itself. Just did it and two minutes later did it gain. May not do again for a few days.

I am not sure if it gets hot as I use it a fair bit to download and it is on most of the time.

Had the guys who manage our work system take a look and they reloaded Windows XP, but no diff.

Any ideas?

Not much help but mine does that too, i think it is because it overheats, not really a laptop if ya cant have it on your lap the fans are in the most stupid place

It is normally because they get hot. You need to make sure that it is on a solid surface as the fans are normally right at the bottom at the back.

mine had been doing this untill this week when i removed the fan and cleaned it-the outlet was so full of dust it was nearly blocked(the metal part that stayed attached to the laptop) now runs quiet and no power outs either.
cheers richie

Yep, does sound like a heat issue, try having it on a desk or one of those special laptop pads you can get from fleabay for a few quid which allow you to have a laptop on your lap and space for heat, they also provide some additional heat dissipation too
