Default Windows Home Server

Has anyone set one up yet ?

Microsoft are offering a free 120 day trial so I thought I'd give it a go and install it on a spare PC.

Yeah, I've build one, it's actually really good considering its a home consumer OS, it's based on Windows 2003 server.
It needs about 80GB HDD to try out if I remember right.
I ordered a trial from MS direct, but it took so long I went and ordered the full version anyway.

Yep I use it. Think it's a 65Gb disk you need to try it.

Mine sits in the loft. Good to have piece of mind knowing your computers are being backed up every day. I also use it as a central repository for music and videos. The remote access features sound useful but I've actually rarely used it.

You definitely need to get a few of the free add-ins going to give you extra features, Webguide, AutoExit etc.

Mine is also configured so I can drop a .torrent file in to a folder and it will automatically download the torrent and then move it to a completed folder. Saves me having to leave my PC on all the time.

I also stream videos to the Xbox 360.

Definitely recommend trying it.

Thanks - have ordered the trial from Microsoft.

Currently have 8 PC's in the house, 3 of which are used actively with another acting as a kind of server so it seems to make sense.

Particualrly useful to centralise all storage as I have a couple attached to plasma TV's that are only used occasionally

I guess that's not a standard empty loft space? If so how do you keep it cool in the summer, I've seen ambient temperatures of over 45 deg C in my loft. I thought about this myself but the idea of building a box and getting fresh air in was all too much like hard work

It's only been in the loft a couple of months so that's not a bridge I've had to cross.

If we ever get any decent weather in this country then I'll re-visit the cooling issue.
