Default PS3 - Backward Compatibility

Looking at getting my son a PS3 80G for christmas from Amazon.
But can it play PS2 games, he already has a wi and I dont want all 3 set up in his room.

I have heard that you can download something that makes them play PS2 games, is this correct ?? and where can i find it ?

Cheers

Sony removed backwards compatibility I'm afraid. And there's nothing you download to remedy this, unless Sony announces it in the future.

Yes launch machines had it, but Im after a brand new machine.
At this time it makes no sense buying a machine that cant play his old PS2 games.
