None of the free ones do a very good job. Do yourself a favour and get something like Nod32. It's not exspensive, and it works.

I was recommended this by an IT manager about 5 years ago and have been using it ever since.
Avast Anti Vrus - avast! antivirus - high security and protection from malware with anti-spyware and anti-rootkit software built in
Never had a problem with it and doesn't affect machine speed like some other AV programmes do.

Nothing free is exactly the best your best off buying a full package for 20 quid and knowing your protected
Probably one of the best all round packages on the market and award winning is this
Scan Computers UK: Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 (v8) UK Edition 3 User 1 Year DVD Edition

Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 - OEM (1 User))

You can purchase a licence key even cheaper on eBay and then just download the latest version from the Kaspersky website.

I've just had to rescue a machine from our local orchestra conductor which had several nasty viruses on it. It also had the latest (paid for) 2008 version of AVG installed which hadn't even detected them let alone tried to remove them. That's about the 6th machine I've had to deal with this year so far because of AVG related problems. Not recommended at all as it's about as effective as a chocolate teapot...

I recommend Nod32 as it generally gets better results in the vb100 / independent tests than many of the others. Having said that, Kapersky is supposed to be pretty good as well

Were Panda/Nod32 etc set up to scan those files on the backup drive and did you do a full scan? External drives can be omitted...

Agree there and if it didnt hog so many resources it would be installed on mine. I did hear the new 2009 Norton is ultra lite in terms of processes etc, so maybe......

Not everybody has the high speed, high spec. machine with 2Gb of memory needed to run Vista. My old workhorse is still running XP.

I'm running Vista on my old laptop (an old celeron with 1gb ram) and it works just fine with all the Aero bits turned on as well. Doesn't need a high spec machine at all

It has been known for reporting false positives in the past. Maybe it's doing it again...

Okay cheers guys really do appreciatte all your input to my question, funny enough ran avg free as a stop gap and it has actually managed to find a few things that my just expired " kaspesky " ignored ??!!

possibly false positives but just seemed a bit strange !!

regards the ebay kaspesky licences, do you mean you just buy the licence key off them and download the actual software from kaspesky ?? bit wary about that incase it was just another licence key that would soon be blacklisted !!

Has this thread benefited from a computer engineer endorsing Eset NOD32 yet? If not then Id like to say that I wouldn't use anything else.

I'm a computer engineer (a senior software systems developer to be precise, and been writing software for over 15 years).

I use NOD32 for all my machines. Wouldn't use anything else either

Agree there, my only digression was an IT Company I worked for had licences with CA Etrust AV, lol I despised installing this on servers but was instructed to do so by the boss.
