You can't really do that. You can use the power settings to switch off the hard drive and display which minimises the electricity consumed.

Ummmm.... Wake-on-LAN - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wake on Lan can be used to bring the computers back up and accept updates then switch off again

Of course you'll need WOL capable NICs

Have you ever got that to work? I've tried all kinds of things to get Wake-on-Lan to bring the PC back to life after enabling it in the BIOS.

Give me a month and I'll let you know. We're installing it for a client as we speak.

standard WOL only works across your local subnet, and is normally not able to traverse routers. I've used something called mc-wol in the past, and we use a product called Rise'n Shine at work. Try googling for something like "wol across subnets" or "wol across internet".

Another alternative is use is to set a power up time in the BIOS, and setup a scheduled task to shut the machine down after a certain time. Check to see if you have that option in the BIOS.

We have a bunch of customers reporting some serious cash savings using Vista and group policy to put machines to sleep at night.

Never got wake up on lan to work properly, so we use a free program called poweroff to shut them down after the daily virus scan has run (and force close any unwanted apps) . Can be set to stay on whatever day you want - ie thursdays to get all updates from the update server / the internet.
