First impressions are that I don't like the new "grid" view, which seems to be the default. It also seems they have removed the option from the browse window to hide the genre, though if you're on a Mac this will aid you in removing the option.

The Genius option is quite interesting, it's somewhat Pandora like, which is good and is obviously what it's meant to be based on.

One thing I didn't notice until someone else (JackClark) mentioned it was that the "Importing" options that used to be in Preferences -> Advanced have moved to the General tab under the CD Import section, there is now an "Import…" button. Maybe it's just me, but I find that somewhat confusing as it would seem to indicate these options are only applicable when you import music from CD, which isn't the case, as they would be used if you import/convert, for example, an MP3 track (if you just add to Library the format would be retained).

Watch out for it resetting your PC without warning once installation complete. VERY amateurish bit of coding there.

New view ok but why can't it be in ADDITION rather than replacing the view I liked poor show.

Mine did (I'm running Vista 64 bit) and as I mentioned elsewhere it also wiped all the recent history in Internet Explorer.

I'm using Vista 32-bit home premium, it prompted me to reboot and I declined. I don't use IE, so not idea if it affected that.

Looks like more people having install issues on the Apple forums.

"shutdown -a" should (still works in Vista?) abort a reboot if you hadn't been sensible enough to closed down your files before installing the update

Mind you, Vista shutdown is pretty rapid

What happened with me is that iTunes very helpfully shut down random programs I was working on whilst it was installing. So the fact it rebooted at the end wasn't too much of a problem as hardly anything was left running.

Installers are the last thing to be written, but you can buy off the shelf ones that don't make you look so much like an amateur.

Back on topic, Genius is pretty good. It generally gets the 'mood' of the song and will pick 24 similiar songs from over 3000 on the iPod.

just change the grid back to how you had it before it doesn't have to stay like that, i normally have mine on coverflow.

i like genius but you can only go up to 100 songs which seems a bit low

How? I get 3 options, list, the new view and the scan covers with list below view.

I want the list with the album covers to the left.

if you set it to list then go to view and scroll down theres an option called show artwork is that how you had it before?

i've always had mine on coverflow so i just clicked on it again, i don't know if they decided to get rid of a type of view maybe they did.

The idea is that it will take the track you initially select and, based on various criteria, it will select a certain number of tracks from your existing Library that match that criteria. It will also attempt to find additional items via the same criteria in the iTunes Music Store.

You can change the number of tracks it will find, the default being 25. If you click Refresh it will keep the first track the same, as that's the initial find, but the remaining tracks in the list should change, though it does depend on how many you do actually have.

I don't know if the star rating system has any effect on things, in Pandora you could say if a track it had picked was something you liked, or did not like, and thus it would include/exclude items like that, thus tailoring the list even more.

I don't get it at all. Personally, I choose the music I fancy listening to. I don't need the computer to tell me

Got well over 500 albums on my ipod, and the genuis thing seems to just throw out random tracks for me (with seemingly no logic behind the decision). The option is now turned off

Genius still needs some work - keeps giving me a list of the top tracks I'm missing which ARE in my library.

The grid view isn't too bad, but I'm getting to the point now that there are som many tracks in my library that I takes a while to load all the images so scrolling is a bit clunky.

Also noticed that some Genre's have the same graphic - Alternative & Punk still has the graphic for Alternative - anyone got a list of the "unique" genre's with their own images?

Setting your own Genre images is possible but a bit of a pain, it's documented here Custom Genre Artwork for iTunes 8 - O'Reilly Digital Media Blog
