Got a problem with my explorer. Something has happened to the registry.

When I start up the pc after I put my password in all that appears is a blank scree n ( no desktop) one program loads up luckily... which allows me to go into c: / windows and then load up the explorer but apart from that noting ... no start menu etc

any ideas how to fix this? if I look in msconfig , explorer isn't there

thanks

Can you restore it to an earlier date?
Vista has a system restore function within.

Are you the machine admin or a standard user?

Sounds like something has gone astray.

Possibly maybe something to do with Live Onecare software. This causes no end of trouble with boot up and net access.
If you have Live Onecare installed, uninstall it then try again.

Firstly I would restore to an earlier date.

Is this registry key set?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\winlogon\

'Shell' variable should = 'Explorer.exe'

Boot it into safemode, n see if it loads the desktop. If it does then 1st try a reboot as normal, safemode may fix it, if not do it again into safemode n use restore point as mentioned.

If u get it working make an image of your whole boot drive!

could also be infected with the vundo (or varient) virus, that stops explorer working. If you run it from task manager it may work for a few seconds and then close down again. Ive just had it on a media centre laptop, nightmare to get rid off
