Default Looking at buying a laptop. About £550 tops. What one?

As the title mentions. im looking for a laptop for uni.

I (the mother ) have up to about £550 maybe more at a push to get a laptop of somesort. i want the best general spec possible. i would like 4gb of ram which i know can be possible at this price, and i'd idealy like a dedicated graphics card. hard drive has to be fairly large but i do have an external one should i need more space.

my main problem is where to look? i've searched the internet and cant seem to find alot, i've seen similar laptops with a similar spec, but if one is Vaio an one is just a normal HP one then the Vaio one costs more? branding i guess.

If anyone knows of any good deals / good places to look then please let me know.

I'd use this as a benchmark although it's 'only' 3gb ram it's only £399. I've had three laptops now, two were Toshibas the other a cheaper Acer. The Acer has been spot on, the others have let me down.
Acer Aspire 5520 Laptops - Cheap Acer Laptops.. Buy the Acer Aspire 5520 laptop at PC World.
What will you use it for? Do you really need the spec you think?

well i want to use it for gaming and other media use. also im a DJ and im going to be using software that links up to my DJ equipment. it has some issues with vista and can run a bit slow, so more ram helps this problem. i have looked at some computers with XP but because everyone is all about vista now there are less with a good spec.

i have heard other good things about acer. thanks for the advice buddy.

Another vote for Dell here. Acers are ok if you get a good one, but they do tend to be a bit cheaply made. Not a good idea if you are taking it to gigs...
