Metal Gear Solid 4 - PS3
Talk about changing your opinion on a game. For the first 30 mins I was completely underwhelmed by the experience, but having put some solid (!) playing time into it, the game rewards you in lots of ways.
The facial modelling, the animation, the fight choreography, the texturing, the ultra detailed 3D models, not to mention pioneering new game elements I've not seen before (I won't spoil it for people yet to play).
It's not perfect by any means - the lack of game save points is a pain - yes it adds to the tension, but sometimes you just want to pick it up for 20mins and put it down, the seemingly insurmountable barriers (4 feet high) that snake can't pass, the over-indulgent narrative and cut-scenes.
But, this game HAS to be played.

You do realise you don't have to wait for it to ask if you want to save - you can do it from the menu for each new area of after each one of the gazillions of cutscenes...

Picked this up at the weekend.
Jesus Christ, what an absolutely epic game.
If you have a PS3 then you *have*to pick this up, there are some moments of absolute genius in there.

I used to love playing computer games and got completely engrossed in them. However now I'm a bit older (21) I really find it difficult to get into them properly due to the fact that I'm alot busier than I used to be, and have too much occupying my mind to be bothered. I bought my PS3 months ago and although I pick it up every so often, none of my games(including GTA4) can keep my attention.
Metal Gear Solid 4 has changed all that. Any free time that I had last week was spent playing it...its a masterpiece! I loved every other MGS game, but this has just taken it so much further - They've even given the characters a good dose of personality this time, and that was badly needed.
Everything about the game is quality - and after my first run through the game I can't recall finding a single glitch.
Very impressed, and well worth the £40.

*SPOILER ALERT* Don't read further unless you've completed it
Did anyone else nearly get a lump in their throats when they went back to Shadow Moses (the ice base from Metal Gear Solid, released 1998) ? Especially with that emotive score iplaying n the background!

That PS1 section was great, shows how much things have progressed when you get to that same area soon after with the new graphics.

I'm still on act 2 ...but how good are those water effects An how sexy is Naomi I also got the shivers while defeating that Ocotpus thingy ..some groundbreaking stuff in there ,The cut scenes do drag on a bit bit it dosent detract from an amazing game.

What about the fight choreography ? Especially Raiden's appearance...I was left thinking, Kojima should be doing movies!
Is it me or did I catch those guards having a "tommy tank" ?

So, finished this over the weekend. And I have to say this is one of of the most impressive games I have ever played. It's just Epic, the production values are through the roof, the gameplay is superb and both graphically and aurally its's stunning.
And in acts 4 and 5, you can forget stealth
The cutscenes, then. Yes, there are lots of them, yes some are overly long and some are pointless.
But there are some absolute belters in there too - Without going into detail I'm thinking Raidens entrance, Liquids first use of the guns of the patriots on the river, and the entrance of outer haven.
Some great little touches too -Mantis trying to read the memory card etc and revisting shadow moses in particular.
Octocamo is just genius, as are the customisable weapons.
And the best bit, there is huge replay value, and this time you can just skip the scenes you don't want to see .
I can't recommend it highly enough.

Have to agree with Pete, one of the best games in years - the production values are head & shoulders above anything else out there.
Certainly warrants multiple plays - but personally I'm waiting for the implementation of trophies, there are actually some in there but you don't find out until the end.
Game of The Year.

I enjoyed the game It's not revolutionary though! I can't remember seeing any pioneering aspects to the "scripted" gameplay.
It's a contender for game of the year but GTA4 will win that title
