PS3 and avi
What is the easiest way of streaming avi files to the PS3? Don't want to convert them or copy them to the PS3 just stream them off a media server (networked hard drive).
From the quick google I did it seems Nero7 or install Linux on the PS3 are the best 2 options. If there is no way to simply stream avi files to the PS3 i'll have to watch them on the xbox instead.
In fact looking at my music folder it doesn't see mp3's either, is that correct?
What media will it play as not a lot by the looks of it?

Cheers Steve, however i'm running the LaCie Ethernet Disk Mini that has Twonkyvision on it but the PS3 sees the media as unsupported media

you on the current firmware for the ps3 ? Avi support was only introduced 2 releases back.
I run the nas version for my thecus, so it's not that
Does it recognise the media server and is it all indexed ? I had a problem with twonky when I removed the default folders in the config , nothing at all showed up.

Yes on the latest firmware on the PS3 as only just got it this week and updated it straight after plugging it in.
When I select the twonky lacie media server on the ps3 I can see all the files listed in one long list where it says it's unsupported media or can go to folders and see it all how it is filed on the disk. Only tried it for the first time this morning so will look at it again shortly when the footy has finished.

Right well I can stream avi's from my Vista laptop/media player 11 but only files that are on the local drives and wont show anything off a network drive being listed on the PS3 even though the network folder is added under MP11 sharing.
Can not stream any avi's direct from the lacie disk and the Twonky media server it is supposed to be running. Just says unsupported data.
Edit to add I have logged a ticket with LaCie as apparently it's a firmware issue that according to the Twonky forums LaCie can send me updated firmware that will support streaming to the PS3.

I posted a little while back about what networkable external disk drive to get (without going as far as a professional NAS) and no one replied so searched and LaCie was about the best I found for what I wanted to spend. Dind't even see Thecus, how much do they start from?
Looks like I should have got one of these and got a sata disk from ebuyer to stick in it. In fact Tecus even stick a 500gb disk in for under £50 Wonder if I can send the LaCie back!

Just FYI - that's not Thecus in the UK, it's a store front for an official distributor. The same people do qnap.co.uk
My mrs got my qnap from there and I've mailed a couple of times with questions and got no response.
Scan I think do them as well.

For a single disc with media server then the N199 is a fair shout. Like a lot of the soho stuff it's a stripped down debian linux OS so there are lots of modules and stuff.
If you are going to be using it for anything valuable (documents, music , pics etc) then IMO you should really be looking at a multi disc raid solution.
We've used the Icy Boxes for temporary provision and they've been really reliable. I'd be tempted to import one of these Tagan ICY BOX IB-NS4220-B Gigabit dual disc RAID NAS GoGoFan.com - Buy CPU cooler, external enclosure, case fan, pc case, vga cooler, and accessories

There's certainly some nice kit out there. I am using it for important stuff but using it as a central storage unit to copy all info onto it from multiple pc's/laptops but leaving the originals on each pc. At least that way it would be extremely unlikely to lose the networked external drive and one of the pc's/laptops internal drives at the same time. Also got important stuff like docs and pics backed up to a usb external drive off my main desktop.
I updated the firmware on the LaCie but it's still not streaming avi's to the PS3 but streams fine to the 360. My laptop streams avi's to the PS3 fine so definitely an issue with the LaCie and PS3 compatibility. No reply from the LaCie support as of yet either

nope , it's wrapped up in a module just the same..
(just a bit more responsive than LaCie because it's not done by the manufacturer)
