In my experiences - Acer are cheap and chearful. Sometimes a good spec can be had for little money, but build quality suffers. Sony are well made, but you pay well over the odds for the brand name.
Personally I'd get a Dell

we used to sell thousands of Acer's needless to say we dont anymore due to a lot of issues with reliability, build quality etc
We used them ourselves in fact I had a C300 Travelmate Tablet one and it wasnt that good
Shooter you say your not into designer gear etc and if it breaks just get another, the thing is these days there are so many to choose from and all the same price especially Dell/Acer/HP/Fujitsu Siemens/Toshiba/Samsung etc

My old Acer lasted a good three years for me and it's replacement lasted about 2.5 years.
Not bad for laptops that were pretty much used everyday as surfing laptops.
I'm considering the Acer Aspire One to replace my broken Acer. (The AC adapter socket on the laptop is loose, so no longer charges up) I have bought a new socket and just need to get the soldering iron out to fix it!!

Ive an Acer Aspire 5002 and have found it great and great value for money, I have it 3 years but the sceen let me down, if I touch it while its turned on it looks like it crashes or something, also on either side of the hindges there are cracks but it has got a lot of use. Thinking of a Dell next.

I sell loads of Acers and so far have had no problems. Recently just got through a large batch of 5220s and all have been fine. Good value for money
Have to say I like Sony but not the prices and am currently using an upgraded HP6720s for work. Not had any probs apart from Vista not playing full screen YouTube vids etc. That aside it's been faultless

Desoldering those power sockets is a right royal PITA

Got Her Indoors her very own laptop for christmas and the cheapest I could find was a £299 Acer from Tesco. It's built better, has a better screen and works better than the Dell I use for work, which cost 3 times as much.

Interesting. My experiences have been exactly the opposite Acers do seem very variable, (and cheaply built). The also use cheap parts (hence the price) which do seem prone to failure after some use. Good luck with it...

Got a few at work and touch wood no issues as yet, just seem to be a little slower than u'd expect for the spec. Price is v favourable tho!

few of mine have broke as well (still have the keys though) I need to order a replacement keyboard for about £30.
The spec on mine is okay (Aspire 5612Wlmi or something ) however the build quality I dont think is the greatest. Had to replace the dvd burner on mine (less than 18 months old hardly used for burning), the keyboard feels cheap and is no good if you are a quick typer. They do do though what they say on the tin
