basically they're asking users to free up part of their broadband connection for wireless users. would be ok for me (I live in the middle of nowhere so noone's likely to ever use it!) - but I'd wonder if it would impact on my Broadband speed if I was in an urban area.
You connect as with any other wireless connection - search for available wireless networks, select BT Openzone or whatever it's called and then login with your BT email address / password.

Apparently it limits external connections to 512k and the home user will always have priority. I enabled mine but nobody has connected to it as far as i know.

I signed up for FON last month, but I don't have the HUB on wireless as everything around the house is connected via the power socket network.
I used FON at a hotel the other week on a PDA without any hassles at all - just entered my BT email address and password at the prompt.
I haven't tried the Anywhere phone outside the house yet, but it connected vey easily via the HUB when wireless was enabled.

so now when I'm in the garden and out of range from my HUB, i can still connect up?
or will it still be out of range?
if so, how can anyone else use the open zone unless they are already in my house?

it will only allow people access if they are within range mate, it doeant extend the range fo the hub. But if you are out and about and need wireless and a FON or BT Openzone network is available you will be able to use them
