Default HD-DVD TO Blu-ray question

Just got me thinking.
Some films that were on the now/soon-to-be extinct HD-DVD format are not available on Blu-ray.
So, would it work if you created an image of a HD-DVD movie, and burnt it to a Blu-ray disc?

I'm not attempting to do this in anyway, it would cost too much anywhow:
BR discs £25, both writers would easily be 150 quid each.

Just wondering thats all.

I'm sure it can be done, nero 8 supports bluray, it won't be a simple create image and reburn process tho.

You wouldn't need an HD writer just a reader which you can pick up the windows compatible xbox360 HD drive pretty cheap. Blu-ray blanks are currently around £7-£9 each.

Thats what I thought. Because surely the differences are only the fact BR disc have a higher capacity.

The encoding specs etc are not the same between the formats (although they use the same compression routines). You have to extract the video and re-encode it. Possible to do, but not as simple as simply copying it. A 2 second search on google brings up loads of links on how to do it...

Universal are starting to ship BR's in June - starting off with a boxset of the 2 "Mummy" films and The Scorpion King, the rest won't be too far behind.
