Default Home based VoIP solution / pitfalls?

Hi All

I haven't had a home phone plugged in for ages and tend to use my mobile.

Thinking about a VoIP solution but don't know what's available.

I've heard stories about people who call you getting big bills, etc. I'd like to avoid all that kind of thing.

Basically, any advice?

Cheers

Simon

Hello

I've tried different things with VoIP with limited success. For me the quality is just not good enough. Even with a router that has QoS to prioritise VoIP traffic I still sounded like a dalek.

I have a free Sipgate number (with a local area code) which is quite useful.

With regards to the bills, I only ever used it for free phone numbers here and in America, calling other VoIP users and for people calling me.

Most VoIP providers cannot beat a deal from Utilities & Phones: International Call Checker using a standard landline if calling abroad.

As a VoiP specialist i use it all the time and have settled for Sipgate for home use... my daughter is on the phone all the time so it makes sense... £5.90 for 1000 mins to landlines and 9.9p to mobs, i dont have a landline now just on cable... this runs my Ip extension form work (Siemens) and the sipgate account... works fine... i also run a phone system at home that i have trialing ip trunks with voiceflex this is ok also... funny really as the system will do 100,000 extensions but it fine running 4
My sipgate account has a local number so I've got voicemail, call forward toi my mobly and cheap calls, what more do you need.
hope this helps

The Siemens S450IP is £50 for the basestation & handset in Tesco's at the moment. That's about 50% off the RRP. Additional handsets are also reduced to £40 each.

Lots of functionality, you can make & receive calls from both the fixed line or VOIP and also customise what handsets can make or receive calls on each service. You can also setup several VOIP accounts or numbers and have them registered to different handsets.

Overall a great piece of kit! I use Draytel.org for my VOIP account, can't fault the quality or the price.
