Any thoughts on the Pioneer PDP-508XD Plasma ?
My TV has gone on the blink, so going to pick one of these up next week at John Lewis (more pricey but 5 year warranty)
If anyone has any issues with them, let me know. My old man has one and it seems a good set, particularly the black levels.

Im tempted by the 428XD as my sofa too close to the tv wall for a 50". I dont think you can go wrong esp with the Gen 9 Kuro's. But definetly look at getting JL to pricematch so you get it cheaper and keep the 5yr warranty. There is a 300+ page thread on www.avforums.com where people say the best pricematch deals they got on each TV.
Let me know what you think if you get it.

I have two options:
1. Hightstreet purchase. John Lewis sell them for £2,399 including 5 year warranty. As you say Simon, they'll price match so I'll check your link - thanks. Also they're normally a no quibble warranty / customer service
2. Internet. I can get the TV for £1,700 and pay £349 for 5 year warranty. This would save £350 over buying retail, but I guess if the website went tit$ up, my warranty would go with it?
What do you reckon ?

Bear in mind we're talking plasma here - not the most reliable of things in the first place ?

No not really but why should i as a consumer pay for insurance that the manufacturer should supply. If things break down just after a years purchase they should'nt be on the market. Maybe i could go down the PSLewis route if things break down

Extended warrenty whatever the purchase is a rip off, secondly, the same plasma tv in 12months time will be worth £500 so ask yourself is it worth it
If you really expect it to break in 13months then why the hell buy it ? you steered clear of the 360 for the same reasons yet that has 3yrs as standard. So you're happy to buy a tv with a track record of failure but not a console at a fraction of the cost

Typically, any TV I buy, I keep for 5 years or more. Given the amount of LCD's I see break down, I don't believe any modern flat-screen will last without problem over that period. So, it's nice to know over those 5 years I can get it replaced by JL at any point.
Likewise, any car I buy, I keep for 3 years. I know my manufacturer's warranty covers me over that time and I won't have shell out £xx,000 to replace it.
Everyone's different I suppose.

But bear in mind like pc's tv's are currently worthless, they are evolving so fast that they are worthless the day they are released.
TBH before the recent lcd influx tv's had a 15yr+ life span and mine certainly did. I've only had maybe 2 tv's before this one and thats in the last 20yrs

i use a 436rxe, bought it when they were brand new out at £1800 and that was the cheapest of the RANGE!!! Absolutely love it and i am thinking of changing it in the next 6months for a 50" Pioneer as it has been incredibly reliable and is the best picture i have ever seen on standard definition and HighDef i have ever seen.
One small issue i have found with my 436 is that is suffered from screen retention badly for the first six months but i do play alot of computer games on it. but other than that absolutely brilliant!
