You just plug you ethernet cable from the back of your pc straight into the PS3 and that's it

If you already have broadband, PS3 Online is free, just set up your PlayStation Network acccount.

You get the cables you need with the ps3

Its very easy to do, plug one end into ps3 the other into pc or router then just set up your account which is on the menu somewhere and off you go, nothing to pay.

Or if you have a wireless router , connect it wirelessly.

Get yourself a router - Either wireless or wired. Then you plug the PS3 into the back of the router, or if its wireless just turn it on and go through the config wizard.

Try to avoid plugging into the back of your PC - It is cheaper (a router will cost you around £40) but, it means you have to have your PC turned on when you go on line witht he PS3.

You can buy a router at your local PC World. They come in 2 varieties depending on the type of internet connection you have:

1) Internet coming in via your "cable" socket
2) Internet comes in via your telephone line.

So the first important question is, do you use 1) or 2) ?

There's no monthly charge by Sony for using your PS3 online. Just plug the router into your existing internet connection. The job of the router is to share this internet line amongst your computers and game consoles.

Most people buy a WIRELESS router, which means you can take advantage of the built in WIRELESS capability of the PS3. It will connect to the router without any cables. Note wireless is prone to the odd drop-out occasionally.

Don't buy on the high street, you'll pay a fortune, try people like these:

or these:

You need to set up ICS (internet conneciton sharing) on the PC you are connecting to. If you are using XP, you need to right click your internet connection, click "sharing" then check the box that says "Enable sharing" or such like.

1. Log on to the host computer as Administrator or as Owner.

2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

3. Click Network and Internet Connections.

4. Click Network Connections.

5. Right-click the connection that you use to connect to the Internet.

6. Click Properties.

7. Click the Advanced tab.

8. Under Internet Connection Sharing, select the Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection check box.

Check the firewall isn't blocking it (go to control panel - security centre)

The fact that the PS3 is getting an IP addresss means that it is connecting to your computer- it just not getting passed that to the outside world.
