Unhappy

i've just bought a new olympus c-860l digital camera, it came with no serial lead (e-bay).
i have now bought a new smartmedia reader from jessops.
i installed the software, installed the lead into my pc and switched on.
without the smart card in the pc is fine, picks up the reader as a removable drive, when the card is installed the pc locks up and i have to switch off and on?
now i have tried putting the card in the reader before i switch on the pc and this doesn' work either,
can anyone help?

You probably ought to disconnect the drive in Windows before removing the disk.

My guess is that there's a driver problem - have you downloaded the latest drivers for your card reader from the manufacturer's web site? Are you using the drivers intended for your particular OS?

Failing that, I'd take the card reader straight back to Jessops and whinge. There are plenty of companies that make and sell them, and you're bound to find one that works for you sooner or later.

Long shot -

Do you have to format the card?
