CS - you're an embarassement

Being a CS nOOb (although I've been an avid FPS player since Doom 1 and have played quite a bit of UT LAN), what advice would you give before I jump into a multiplayer game only to get my arsed whipped by more experienced bods and have to suffer the torment of sarcastic messaging ?
Do you reckon I should stick to BOTS on a LAN for practice or just jump right in?

Jump right in m8 !
prolly best to find a server where Friendly Fire is off ( ie u cant kill teammates) cos some ppl get really peed off when a noob teammate kills em.
UK2 have some beginner servers www.cyborg2.com for details
basically if u've played fps b4 you'll take to it like a duck to water, it's just a matter of learning the finer points.
good luck and be warned its highly addictive

I reckon that yes BOTs are most deffinately a good place to start. It will help you to learn the maps and get a feel for the different guns and the workings of the game. The bots hoever give you a different style of gameplay althogther when compared to the game of human players. After you have got as I say a feel for the game a bit more try joining some of the UK2 servers (they have a series of noob ones, although you may find a lot cheat!!!!!) to build up your skill a bit more. If you do join a game with experienced players you will become very frustrated as usually it is a complete massacre and your feet will barely touch the ground before you are killed. However saying that playing with more experienced players will help your skill level improve much more rapidly as you can watch how people move etc and ask for advice. Why not join us for a couple of games to see how you get on?

The quickest way to learn is to jump straight in and play. Its a different game from UT/Quake as its possible to have one shot kills with most guns.
Its also a team based / task game so shouting everyone on the other team is not the only way to win. Always stick together. This is the Number One Top Tip!
just load it up and start playing. Expect to hold up the bottom of the score board for around two weeks.

Nah mate, jump right in.
You will die ALL the time at first but stick with it.
Read the newbie guides tht can be found on forums.counter-strike.net and the faq , plenty of good advice.
......or search for previous CS threads on here, plenty info there too.
Good luck and may your (many) deaths be honourable

Cheers chaps!
I've read about all there is to rear on tactics etc. and have set up some useful key binds and stuff. I abhor cheating, so that's not a worry although I've got Paladin setup as I see it's required on quite a lot of servers. I played Gunman Chronicles for a bit and got invited to join a clan 2nd game - which was nice I think what appeals is the tactical approach to CS whereas a lot of other multiplayer FPS games can be a matter of luck. Get spawned in the wrong place in UT/GC and 'BAM' game over. I've viewed quite a few games aswell to get an idea although learning the maps seems like a damn good place to start!

Steve is a bit funny in the head, always going about some guys called ping and lag. They seem to give him alot of grief and tends to leave the game within 2 seconds of joining.
Those noob hunting rumours are complete rubbish I prefer the team kill malarky myself.
p.s. The weather stinks don't it m8
