I have just bought a new PC with SATA hard drive and need to install a second hard drive (Slave) from my old PC which is IDE. I have opened the PC but the only IDE ribbon is for the DVD player.
Whats the best way to get this drive installed? Can I just take out the DVD player and plug it in? I have two spaces on the ribbon for the drive but no power source.
Thanks
Jeremy

As a temporary solution you could unplug the IDE and power cable from the DVD drive and plug them into your hard drive, this of course means no dvd drive, so it's not ideal.
What you probably want to do is to get one of these, a Y power splitter. This will give you the two power sources for the hard drive and dvd drive. All you then need to do is set one of the devices to be master, the other slave, and plug in the IDE cable (and of course the power) and it should work.

yes you can do that.Usually on some motherboards, there is both IDE and SATA sockets. They are pretty obvious. If you dont then you will need to use the DVD one in the meantime.
Markus mentioned the power, but surely the power cable running into the DVD drive is the standard one and not the power cable that is used in SATA units ?
