Thompson Speedtouch router + sonicwall
We have only been give a single fixed IP address.
Is it possible to configure the Thompson with the fixed IP and use PPPoE from the Sonicwall ?
We've also got spare Draytek DSL modem lying around - would it be better to use this ? Its not supplied by the ISP, "Be"
Which subnet mask would I use with a single fixed IP ? 255.255.255.254 ?

Which Speedtouch?
Some versions (546, 510 I know of) can do a DHCP spoof and pass through a single IP to a device (eg SonicWall) behind it. Remember it not being the easiest thing to configure.
Which model of Draytek have BE given you? If it's a Vigor 100 then I would use that - POP to setup with a SonicWall and very stable. Set the WAN port of the SonicWall to use NAT + PPPOE and you put the ADSL username / password into the SonicWall. You can leave it to get it's IP, DNS etc from the ISP.

Thanks ChrisB
We have a Draytek 100 modem, not supplied by Be - we had it lying around. I'll use PPPoE with that. Where do I specify the fixed IP address we've been given ? We need it so people can VPN in.
Can't remember the Speedtouch model (I'm not on site) but its brand new, has 4 yellow LAN ports and a wireless antenna. Think its a 780WL

I'd use the Draytek 100 then - I've got quite a few sites using them now.
You can specifiy the WAN IP on the SonicWall when you configure the WAN interface with your ADSL username / password. When you set the WAN port to be NAT + PPPOE you should see some extra options / boxes for WAN IP, DNS etc. Normally though the static IP will get automatically assigned to you when you authenticate with the ISP.

Chris - which is the most stable and reliable method ?
The draytek modem + Sonicwall ?
or
The router (fixed IP) and the sonicwall (fixed IP) ?
Its no trouble to get an extra fixed IP address from the ISP

I've probably got an equal number of sites running each configuration, though we use the Drayteks now unless we need to do something unusual. Not had problems with either. The Draytek is easier + quicker to set-up and probably quicker to troubleshoot (there's no config required on the Vigor 100).

Seems the new connection is plagued with dropped connections.
The broadband router is sync'ing ok (the green light illuminates as it should) but we're not getting internet through. The ISP says from their end, it looks like lots of dropped connections.
To recap, the Thompson router is set to bridged mode, the TZ190 firewall has the fixed IP and it set to "STATIC"
Does the MTU value need tweaking at all ?

update - checked cables, checked filters, checked router
fault is with the line or the isp - I can get the router to connect no bother, but after 10mins of perfectly good internet connection, the dsl light goes out, and it then reconnects again after 20 secs.
ISP has turned up the line today, so will monitor over next day or so.
I AM right in thinking there's no way the SonicWall could be forcing the Speedtouch to lose its DSL connection, could it ?

When using a draytek 100 modem with a firewall, in the Draytek's menu, do you use PPPoA or PPPoE ? I read PPPoA allows MTU's up to 1500 , which I think is what the sonicwall is set to.
Also, what do you set "modulation" to ?
