Unhappy Virgin Media - Question for Pimmo2000

Pimmo hope you can advise?

Back in the old days when VM's maximum download speed was up to 10 meg, I was getting somewhere in the region of 7000 kb/s download. Then came the upgrade to 20 megs and guess what... download speeds are still in the region of 7000kb/s.

I've called VM's BB helpline and they say that they've check my connection and that it should just be a matter of time before my speed increases blah blah blah.

What else can you suggest any advice would be very welcome. I didn't mind paying for a 10 meg service and getting almost what I was paying for, but paying for 20 megs and still getting the same as the old 10 meg service is a bit annoying.

Help.

I suggest U2Uing me and we can sort this out.

Matter of time bull **** makes no sense. The up grades have been done months ago.. You've been fobbed.

Check you U2U and pass over the information I need.

Shouldn't take me long.

I am off till Monday though

Im paying 17.99 for 2mbs and now i read its £4.50.
I am getting a discount for the whole loss of sky one etc mess which is great.
SHould I be able to get a better speed for the same price without losing my discount
Any advice gratefully received Pimmo.

Thats the deal.. there's always room to improve and gain discounts if you can be strong willed and polite .. call customer care... ideally on a weekday when its not India !

It's not difficult to see what your modem is capped or configured to run at:

For all of the NTL/Virgin cable modems you can log on to them and view the configuration. My cable modem is a small blue thing with "cable modem NTL:" printed on the top and "NTL: 250" on the bottom. On these it's dead easy...

In a web browser, simply go to the following URL (which will access your cable modem 90% of the time, irrespective of model)

http://192.168.100.1

On my blue thing you then click on "Login" at the top left hand...

... which should prompt for userID and password. Enter "root" for both.

On the next screen, click on "Operation Configuration" and you should see what your modem and hence your connection is running at.

For 20Mb it should say (just the important bits):

Network Access : Allowed
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 20480000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 768000


That shows a downstream of 20480000 (20Mb, well 19.53Mb and some Virgin numptie has decided that 20Mb is 20480000 rather than 20971520) and upstream of 768000 (768Mb, well (again) 750Mb - should really be 786432).

So, as long as it says 20480000 and 768000 you're configured to run at 20Mb. If you're not getting 20Mb throughput, at least some of the time, then there's a fault and you need to speak to log a support call. If your figures AREN'T 20480000 and 768000 (I can't remember specifically, but I'm guessing that 10Mb will show as 10240000 and 512000) then complain to customer services as you're not on 20Mb.

On some of the other modems you can simply see the name of DOCSIS configuration file that's downloaded initially - this sets the rate - and Virgin usefully name it in a way that means you can quite easily work out the rate from the file name. (Like the 10Mb has 10240 or something similar in the name , and I guess 20Mb has 20480 in it).

I paid for 20 meg and got 4 constant....so I downgraded to 4 and get 4

In all fairness Dr. No that's not really any use to him.

As regardless of the modem setup he is getting less than the required speed. Calling tech support has already failed him.

Customer care will only suggest calling tech support and regardless of what you think you've found out from the modem they wont listen as they are not technical. At best they will call tech support and you'll still end up speaking to them.

If he PM's me I'll help. If not the 25p per minute line is open 24/7

Pimmo all sorted, as I said in my PM it appear to me an issue with my router and nothing to do with Virgin Media.

Download speed are around the 19575 kb/s - Sorted!
