BroadBand Speed?

BroadBand Speed?
I have just upgraded my Internet connection to 8Mbps, from 2.2Mbps, with BT Broadband - to include Wi-Fi.
My Wi-Fi Hub hasn't arrived yet, should be here today
Anyway - my speed shows as 7.6Mbps when hovering over the 2 flashing computers in the Sys Tray.
I have done a speed check and get 1.96Mbps ..... this is the EXACT same speed I was getting when paying for just 2.2Mbps!!
BT said my line can go to around 6Mbps ....
It actually seems slower this morning than it normally does!
Will it speed up when I activate my new account or should it now be producing lightning speed?
Do I need to do something to my PC to unleash this potential?

Maybe this answers my question?
Just in from BT:-
"Although you should have a stable broadband connection after the first hour, the service takes a further 10 days to settle at the final optimum speed for you phone line. During this period you may notice your broadband line speed fluctuating. Again, this is a normal characteristic of the way the service works and not a fault. During the first 10 day period, we suggest you only call our helpdesk if you experience a total loss of service for more than one hour"
Sound about right to you lot?

Yeah that's the usual stuff. BT shape traffic like mad at peak times as well. Broadband in the Uk is a joke to be honest. There are things you can do to ensure you get close to your optimum speed. check out this site and read the bit about increasing your line speed. Helped me no end.

Not only does it take a while to stabilise your DSL traffic, it will also be affected by WIFI. You then bring in 2 connectivity issues. Firstly, the claimed broadband speed is theoretical throughput, which means if nobody in the world was online, you would get your 8mbs. Secondly WIFI also has an intermittent beacon TX/RX. this is affected the further away you get from the router, ie if your in the garden, then your signal may drop or mbs OTA will decrease to 500kbs / 1mbs.
Another thing to add to the pot is contention ratio, I imagine if you are a BT customer, you are on a 25 to 1 contention ratio. This means 1 broadband pipe to 25 users. Cable has a lower contention ratio.
Hope this helps
