i have a netgear DG834N (in lounge)
and an EDIMAX EW-7728IN pci card installed and thats upstairs.

the signal from the edimax screen is normal to good, and NOT strong when it used to be in the same room,.

is there anything i can do?

how about replacing one of the antennas to one of these Wireless Pro : Number One for WiFi :802.11b/g, 2.4Ghz : Indoor Antenna
obviously cheaper on fleabay.

 

Use a netgear USB antenna. A WG311T i think it is.

The problem with PCI cars is that invariably they sit at the back of the machine, with the antenna nicely shielded by the case. Making it pretty useless.

The upstairs downstairs thing should be ok - (typically you will get a better signal than through walls)

 

stop messing around with wireless - its so....yesterday!

For I think the sixth time ( ) , devolo 85 gives you less than 40 real speed, g is faster (but potentially not as secure)

 

wwp - I've come across the DG834N having poor wireless issues within close proximity of the router. It's been so long that I can't remember the resolution. I'll check tomorrow and get back to you.

Homeplug 85 is actually on par with wireless-g. Both average around the 20-22Mbps on performance *depends on environment.

Homeplug 85 normally offers far superior performance over distance compared to wireless-g. Reason wireless-g scales back on speed to compensate for signal degrade over distance.

Most wireless-g kit suffers from a performance hit when encryption is enabled.

Both wireless-g and homeplug 85 are secure in their own ways. Out of the box, homeplug is the most secure. However if wireless-g is configured with WPA2-PSK using a good pass key then its more secure than homeplug.

Wireless-g offers mobility where homeplug is restricted to wiring. *not going to mention homeplug with built-in wireless.

Wireless and homeplug 85 are both great technologies.

 

i'm not gonna change again. i orginally bought the dg834pnuk
with the wpn111 adapter , the adapter is ****e as it keeps overheating, and can't get the reception from downstairs,
i bought a linksys, pci card with the speedbooster, and it wasn't any better
exchanged the dg834pnuk for a dg834n, and it wasn't compatable with the linksys card, so i sold the linksys card, and bought the edimax card.

as you can see i changed 1 too many times.

 

not to mention prone to interference and drop-outs

never get those with the DeVolo!

 

and you plug the DeVolo in and....it just works - EVERY time!

 

Wireless g - I can max out my 20 meg and it sits at the max with near enough a flat line, devolo (connected at 85) fluctuates between 13 and 15, never maxing the connection. It won't even stream standard def video files.

I'm not saying the technology is bad, it's great, it just doesn't get near the headline figure due to overhead. I went for wireless n after my experience with hp85 because it was cheaper than the homeplug 200 as well as faster.

I'm now prepared to take 50 quid for the devolo 85 pair if anyone wants them. (used for about an hour)
