have you overclocked the machine in any way?
You will almost certainly find that what is written on the sticker of a component is going to be correct. The discrepancy could well be because you have 533 and overclocked to a higher speed.

How much more are you gonna add & what operating system are you using? 32bit or 64bit?
If you have two sticks operating in dual channel mode & put another single stick in then it might have a detrimental affect on performance.
If you put another 2 sticks of 1Gb ram in then it will run dual channel but unless you are using a 64bit OS then your system will only see & utilise between 3-3.5Gb.

ECC is only needed for servers and the like.
As I said, if you just put one stick of memory in then you will no longer be operating in dual channel mode and will lose performance.
As DDR2 is dirt cheap, I would get two sticks of 1Gb to keep dual channel mode even though your system will use less than 3.5Gb of it in total.

I think Daz may be partially right about the dual channel mode, but I don't think its as simple as he makes out. I may be wrong, as dual channel has been around a while and has been in all sorts of configurations.
You need to check your motherboard manual to see what it says about dual channel. It will be quite specific in how you have to setup your memory in order for this to work. Some motherboards can only use dual channel with two sticks of ram, not four. In addition, there may be a specific order that the ram has to be placed into the motherboard in order to get your dual channel running. As you are have 1GB sticks and are fitting 1GB sticks then this should limit issues, but you never know
Anyway, on my system dual channel makes no difference to overall performance, less than 2% in games so at worst 1 fps in the games i play.
P.S. non ECC and non buffered is the only type that will work in your machine.
