If I have a date in a cell how can I set a function in another cell to take the first 2 digits from that value?

E.g

CELL A1 shows 30/01/08


how would you get cell A2 to prepopulate with the first 2 digits of value in A1 in this case '30'

In A2 enter =A1

Then format the cell A2 as custom format, type:- dd
