Oh dear lolz.
It's not going to make any difference at all - Warner wanted people to vote with thier wallets not with empty signatures. Warner HD-DVD films got outsold 3:1 by BluRay - It's a done deal.

Apparently since Warner's announcement, the ratio has jumped to 6:1, and the for sale section of AV Forums has more 360 add-on drives than you can poke a stick at.
Also read a report that BR players in Japan are now selling like hotcakes accounting for about 90% of the market, and that figure did NOT include the PS3.
I signed the petition simply to make Universal, Paramount & Dreamworks a kick up the posterior.

Yep, it looks like blu-ray is the likely winner of the HD formats. The question is will it replace dvd, or will it go the way of the laserdisc

It will replace DVD because manufactureres will make it so. In other words, they will stop making DVD players, in the same way as they have to all intents and purposes stopped making CRT TVs.
It was never the consumer that chose the next technology, it was always the manufacturers (once a standard format has been decided)

but, Laserdisc was a replacement for VHS but both formats still used the same TV - BR/HD don't use the same telly that a DVD does. Laserdisc was a better picture but there's a much bigger jump in quality this time and most people have started to make a note of the numbers game - how many people when buying a DVD player cared to look to see whether it was 576i or 576p?

The laser disc player was crap. It cost a fortune. So did the discs. You had to turn them over just like an lp ffs. I think we bought 4 discs in total. 2 failed before my Dad gave up on it and swapped it for a mini.
Now I know its easy to compare the two formats but trust me, there is no comparison. Blue Ray on a full HD tv is breathtaking. There are times you almost want to reach out and touch the screen because what you see is so tangible. Casino Royale was a better film on Blue Ray than it was at the cinema. Seriously. I don't know blue ray failure rates but I bet there aren't many.
It would actually be a tragedy if one or both formats didn't sound the death nell for the dvd format. Its been fun but its time is over.

I've still got one or two dvds that are "flippers"
I've got an upscaling dvd player. Put that next to a blu-ray machine playing the same movie, and you'd be surprised and how close the two are. Dvd will do fine for me at the moment...

I'm hoping a lot of the HD playback comments not being that much better than SD are down to the tellys. My DVD/Telly does such a grand job that in many cases I think there is not that much difference. But there are scenes where I think the HDDVD is quite a bit better. But I only have 720p so that's only 25% up on 576p. Now 1080p, that should make a difference

You notice the difference between the 2 with stuff thats quite graphical - I've got Cars & Casino Royale on both DVD & BR and with the Pixar material there is a huge difference - its less noticable on the majority of Casino Royale but the title sequence is reference material.
Dont know which DVD player you have but upscaled stuff can look good as I always use my PS3 as a DVD player now - it does a good job, buts its not as good as a proper BR movie.
I know HD is supposed to provide better/richer colours, but I think thats a by product of better colour seperation, the higher resolution stops colours bleeding together.
If blu-ray is butter then upscaled DVD is a tub of utterly butterly (sort of) - take the taste test!

Don't get me wrong, I agree that it's better. I just don't think it's a huge step forward (like vhs to dvd was for example), and I'm not about to replace my 500+ dvd collection just yet

I have a Oppo upscaler considered to be one the best for the price on the AV forums and the PS3 up scales better IMO . Put a Blu Ray Disc in and the quality improves dramatically. You'd have to be blind not to notice the difference . And yes its all over for HD , Over here (Calgary) I've bought Blu Ray discs for as little as $17 cad (about £9) and far more to choose from compared with HD .

But you don't need to. You have a dvd player Just compliment that with a Blue Ray player.

So you've gone from "dvd will do me just fine" to "probably get a blu-ray player next week" in the space of 8 posts..
we all knew you'd buckle eventually, its taken a while though I'll give you that!

Not getting it for the blu-ray player. It's a games machine
If I want a blu-ray for films, I'll probably get a standalone unit (when they start releasing some that are "upgradable").

If its going to be predominantly a games machine - I wouldn't swap the 360 for a PS3.
I love my PS3, but I still wouldn't get rid of the 360 just yet - I know you've gone through that many consoles that you now have your own dedicated repair centre but are you really going to abandon the 360?
Just wondering if I can clear a space off my friends list!!

I brought the HD DVD add on for the 360, i couldn't care which way it goes, for the time being i'm happy with the HD option, and if Blu-ray does win, so be it, i'll get the add on which M$ will release [sure they pretty much but confirmed this on a similar debate on different thread.
It's not like i will never be able to watch my HD DVD's ever again, should be able to pick some nice clearance bargins up

After this year's CES there were many rumors. Every studio was either leaving or staying and rumors continued. Now Universal officially states its continuing support for HD DVD.
Ken Graffeo states that not one rumor was substantiated and that nobody ever talked to Universal. To conclude his announcement Graffeo stated that Universal has planned a lot of other things.
We can now say that Universal will continue to support HD DVD... When will the next rumor come by?

I read that as they won't rule out releasing blu-ray discs, just that they're giving themselves the option of going format neutral.
Of the 3 studio's remaining, I can't see how the remaining 2 could continue to be HD DVD exclusive. Warner have triggered a snowball and its getting bigger...
