Default Router

At the moment i cant go on xbox live as it means i will have to keep the 360 down by the computer all the time(which is a pain). If i was to buy this... Amazon.co.uk: Max Value 54 Mbps Cable Router, with Firewall & Filtering: Amazon.co.uk: it just be a case of sticking the wire into that router and away you go??

IIRC you will have to turn off the cable modem for a while (hour or two, not 100% sure on that) then plug the router in, turn modem back on then both machines connect to the router.

Modem > Router > Machine

Also my 2p worth, that router would not be my choice

Broadbandbuyer.co.uk | Linksys WRT54GL 54Mbps Broadband Wireless-G Linux Router

Broadbandbuyer.co.uk | Netgear WGR614 v7 54Mbps Broadband Wireless Router

either of those I would go for, yes it's a bit more $$$ but worth it I would imagine

Ok, so will the router have to be constantly plugged into the computer modem when on live or can the router be taken into another room and still work?

For internet access, the router will need to be plugged into the ntlworld modem via a wired connection called Ethernet. Your computers/consoles can then talk to the router via wired Ethernet connections or wireless connections.

Ok, so theres not point in buying one then, as the xbox will still have to stay down near the computer all the time. Thanks anyway

Well it won't really - I mean the length of wire from your Xbox and indeed your PC to your router is up to you. Or if you go wireless then obviously it can pretty much be wherever you like.

Ok, so you have a cable modem that presumably , at the moment connects stright into your PC.

I am also assuming this modem is "always on" In other words, when you turn on the computer, you don't have to run through any connection step in order to ge ton the internet. You just double clikc and you're away.

So, what a router does is sit in between the router and the machines you want to hook up to the internet, and acts as a kind of distributor.

The set up goes - For example

Code:

					|---------> Computer 1
					|
					|
					|
Phone line<---->Modem<--->Router<-------|---------> COmputer 2
					|
					|
					|
					|---------> Xbox
The connection from the outside world goes to the modem, then to the router .

The connections from the router to the various terminals can be either wired or wireless

In either case they can be where ever you like, they dont *have* to be near anything - THe only restriction is how you feel about having lots of wires about the place, or how you feel about spending money on wireless adapters for the PC/Xbox.

Why not just get a wireless adapter for the 360?

Yes its fairly simple to setup - Most routers come with pretty good instructions

No it wont affect the computer to any great extent - Although if you are downloading gigs of ****, don't expect your LIVE performance to be brilliant.

Yes you can use the 360 anywhere within reason - I.e in the same house, I mean don't go taking it to your Mums and be surprised when it doesnt pick up the network.

Equally can be a 'mare I'm afraid. Took me 3 weeks to get my AOL up on a Netgear.

What you do is get the settings CableVirginWest need you to use and then manually put these in the modem bit of your router. You do it using an internet browser. Then cross your fingers it connects!

You should also enable a security setting (like WEP-PSK) on the router (to make sure no one else uses your connection (although her neighbour's 'open' network is handy when I visit the mother in law ) and make sure your Xbox is set to reflect EXACTLY these settings and password.

It might well work first time or it might not

Really? I could take up SKY's £5 offer and dump AOL without fearing no internet connection for weeks? Safe to say I have learnt some stuff along the way too by now!!!
