Question PC Problem

Device Manager is listing a 'PCI Simple Communications Controller' as faulty.

I have uninstalled, re-booted, allowed Windows to search for drivers - still showing as a problem?

Now, something strange happened today - I could not get my daughters camera to load its pictures to the PC.

The PC could see the Camera and even named it correctly.

When I fiddled about with the USB connectors the camera finally gave up its contents.

I installed a USB 2.0 Card about 8 months ago - it has an internal USB which I have my ADSL Modem connected to, and 4 external USBs .... one of these I use to host a 4 in 1 USB. This gives me 7 extrenal USBs.

I'm thinking that the issues are related, could 'PCI Simple Communications Controller' be the USB Card .... Device Manager lists the USB Controllers seperately and they are fine.

Any ideas welcome

Yep sounds like it. Did the new PCI card fitted come with any drivers CD?

What make is the USB card? What you can try is removing the simple device from device manager and rebooting. If it still comes back as an unknown, then try reseating the card in the PCI slot (After you have powered off the PC first!). Failing that try the manufacturers website for an updated driver.

Cheers, I did Uninstal and re-boot ... didn't help.

I'll take the cover off and have a look see - just wanted to know whether the 2 issues could be related, thanks.

take the card out, and reboot. See if the problem goes. If it does then at least you know you are barking up the right tree

Also, it could be a power related issue. USB ports provide power to the components that are attached to them. The more you have attached, the more power that is needed. There are limits, especially if any hubs you have plugged into USB ports do not have some sort of mains adapter to get more power.

Have a look at how many things you have attached, that may be worth looking into if it you know its a USB issue.

Cheers.

I have just taken PC cover off, disconnected all USB's, wiggled the card, cleared all the dust, closed back up again, USB located new hardware, I found the USB Card Driver disc - intalled hardware, installed drivers.

Still a problem

Not sure it is to do with the USB Card now?

Something good came out of it, however - my Laptop which had a problem, I used the chance to connect that to my ADSL Modem and log onto the Internet ..... it found the drivers it needed and it runs perfectly now

Sorry, you may have misunderstood me.

Turn off the computer, remove the card, turn on. Then look to see if the problem is there. If it is the USB card, then the fact that it is no longer in the machine should mean the error goes.

If the error does go when you boot the machine, then it may well be that your card has come to the end of its life (since you tried the reseating, cleaning and drivers options). There are other things of course, like MS updates that can kill things, not to mention those silly registry tune up utilities, USB optimizers and other new software.

Thanks, I did understand - but had put it all back together when I saw your post

I'll attack it again tomorrow .... but, I'm now not sure it's the USB Card .... typing 'PCI Simple Communications Controller' into google does not indicate that it is related to USB at all?

Failing that try slotting the card into a different PCI slot on your board. Not un-common to have a dodgy PCI slot.
On the matter of power, how big is the PSU in the PC?
And Which Operating system are you using?

OS is XP

Dodgy PCI Slot is a good idea ...

No idea about how big the PSU is - I could say 100mm x 50mm x 200mm - but you mean power, don't you?

Yeah I should have stipulated power consumption and not diameter
Only reason I ask is that PC could be under load with a low powered PSU.
