Looks like the PS3 is slowly picking up sales. The fact it's still being outsold by the PS2 and PSP has got to be a little frustrating for Sony though.

I bet Nintendo are laughing all the way to the bank

The PS3 sales figures are shocking, aren't they!

I'm sure 2008 will be a much better year for it.

Yes, it has been around for a long time and the original Xbox is nowhere near that number.

I'm just surprised as I'm old and when I was a child playing video games (Atari VCS) was classed as being a geek/freak.

Amazing to think the Atari VCS only sold approx 40 million units ( '77 - '92 )

Shows what an amazing job Sony did selling over a 100 million PS2's globally

Consoles weren't for the masses back then, fair play to Atari for selling that much, nowadays it's pretty much the norm to own a console.

PS2 has a vast catalogue of games catering for usa, europe and Jap, also it's cheap as chips now so coupled with that huge back cat of cheap games is a good investment, unfortuanately they took the arrogant approach because they were market leaders and expected those 100mil folk to buy the ps3.

The Ps3 is no better nor worse than the 360, it's a great console, but poorly marketed and not enough games to back it up, i'm sure this year, maybe start of next they will be back in the position of the ps2, the question is what is the ps3's expected shelf life, compared to when the next 360 is shipped, MS forecast 5yr lifespan of which 2yrs is gone, so when ps3 gains momentum will the next gen xbox be ready

I think 2008 is going to be a good year for the PS3 - what I've seen of the games now appearing and those due this year I think I'll be using the console much more than I have done so far. I've had mine about 8 months and so far its been mainly a blu-ray player, but the big titles are slowly leaking out, good games but not getting the recognition they deserve simply down to sales figures - Ratchet & Clank for example.

GT5 looks amazing, MGS4 due in March, Killzone 2, Little Big Planet etc. Can't think of many big title (exclusive) games due on the 360 this coming year. Over the last few months the big games have had a simultaneous launch on both 360 & PS3 (COD4, Asassin's Creed etc) so choosing between the 2 on games availability isn't as clear cut as it was 6 months ago.

A big thing is being made of Home, and it can't come soon enough but I'm worried that its still not going to offer what Live does.

The PS3 still has some bugs that I can only call "stupid" and can't believe Sony are overlooking them, such as the audio out HDMI/Optical problem or the fact that they don't recommend any bluetooth headset, not even their own...

PS - the PlayStation 2 sold 200m worldwide...

I read that figure on Engadget a few weeks ago - should have known better really shouldn't I?

On the suject of replacement's though, Sony are aiming for a 8 yr lifespan on their consoles aren't they, I don't think the PS2 is due to stop being manufactured until later this year, but if MS are planning on a new xbox in 3 yrs then Sony might have to rethink that strategy.

Makes you wonder what gimmick will Nintendo will come up with in order to sell their next Super Mario box if they're not wanting to compete on the graphics front.

Be interesting to see what happens with what tech goes into the next round of machines - HD DVD makers Toshiba using the cell in TV's to handle upscaling, and also rumoured to be producing a box that'll run 360 games. Will Sony allow MS to incorporate a BR drive in its future consoles if HD DVD is terminally ill?

I doubt Sony, Toshiba et al will try producing another CPU again, despite its success...

Its ironic really that Toshiba manufactures the cell processor that goes in the PS3.

They can not stop them, It would be in breach of some law, i forget which right now, but the competition can't hold an exclusive like that, it's against fair trade and all that.

All this talk of Microsoft having a 5 year plan with the 360 is absolute rubbish.

If their Operating Systems are anything to go by, I can well believe they'd try

Of course, with game development resources like time and money increasing exponentially, then surely the chances of a 5 year cycle are decreasing with each new generation of console?
