Default Talk to me about C#

I'm from a programming background, primarily RDBMS (Ingres) and 4GLs.

Just wandered...

- what C# is like to pickup?
- how easy to learn?
- why use C#?
- good skill?

Pretty straightforward. Very much like Java.

If you can code in an OO language, you'll find it easy.

- why use C#?
Very flexible and powerful language that is rapidly being adopted all over the place (just for windows platforms obviously).

- good skill?

Yep

As said, easy to pick up if you're familiar with OO languages. Visual Studio code completion helps a lot when you're not familiar with all of the libraries.
(And even when you are!)

Very versatile. For example if you come from a RDBMS background you can write stored procedures and UDFs in C# and compile them into a DLL that executes within the SQL Server 2005. Can be a good solution in certain scenarios.

Ditto all but pimmo2000. I hope you are not confusing C# with C.

C# is a powerful programming language.
Lots of resources on the web.
Just be ready to keep learning new stuff every week, with Microsoft's technology, it's hard to keep up.

Normal old C is a very useful tool to have in your armoury as well though, so that comment from Pimmo still sounds a tad ill informed

Yes and of course what you learn in Uni really prepares you for the real world doesn't it? Those who can do, those who can't teach, thats the old cliche isn't which fits quite nicely for academia? Taught by those who can't who read it out of a textbook and were taught by those that can't etc etc.

Not just Windoze, mono works on linux and has support for asp.net and a subset of Windows.Forms certainly for 1.1 and it works (in a fashion) on OS X also. Can also get monodevelop and the c# complier working.
