Question Help needed, I'm a bit PC illiterate. ;)

Got a couple of things I need to try and sort out, so I'm sure you fine folk in here will be able to help.

First one, probably nothing to worry about, but it's still confused me.

Was downloading a couple of songs, and this little bubble popped up from the task bar, pic;

I've no idea how or what virtual memory is or does, I'm thinking it's nothing major though.

Lastly, but, probably most important. My PC crashes quite regularly, and goes, for want of a better phrase, a bit spackered. Pic below,

I't happens pretty much whenever Windows media player(may happen with other sources but WMP is most often) tries to play a video of the net, dvd etc.

I'm not sure if it's connected, or maybe the problem, but I have Nokia PC suite installed, and if I restart the PC, when Nokia boots up(?) the display ***** up and I have to reset the resolution. It goes from 1280x1040 to 800x600 resolution.

Hope you can help, if I've left anything noteworthy out that will be of help let me know. It's pissing me off a bit now.

Cheers,

Micky

I've had issues with the Nokia PC Suite. Uninstall and get an updated version. Just fixed a PC that this had knackered up.

Also try and update your display driver.

As for the Windows Media issue, you could try and download "The KMPlayer" This comes complete with all the codecs it needs, and therefore bypasses a lot of the files that Windows Media relies on. This could therefore circumvent a WMP problem.

The virtual memory is not an issue. Just make sure you still have enough free disk space for windows to be happy. How big is your drive, and how much spare space is there?

Right, just had a looksy.

I assume it's the hard drive you mean with regard to disc space?

Hard drive size is 82GB

Free space is 30.7GB

XP Home should be happy with that much free space?

Hiya

Yeah its the hard drive size I was after. What you have is fine, its not too full.

Updating the display driver is not that hard, you just need to work out what sort of graphics card you have. There are lots of places you can look, device manager etc.

I guess the Windows Media issue is codec related then. As VLC also does not have to rely on WMP. Google CCCP, they do an insurgent tool to remove codes, and also a pack to pop in that works well. Its all free.

I can help you through some things here, but I can also pop up. It will prob take an hour or two.

Andy, I'm not sure that my graphics card is even installed properly. I couldn't find the install disc, so downloaded the software, probably wrong though.

I've tried to just do things my self, some have went as planned, some have went a bit fubar'd

I make good cups of tea if your not busy at the weekend

Cheers,

Micky
