Default HDMI Issue

This one is really bugging me...

I have a Phillips DVD player with HDMI output connected to my HD LG 42". Now the video looks superb but the Audio is dropping out very few seconds and is crackling.. Quick search on the net finds that it could be the cable or 'cheap' DVD that I have.

I've swapped out the cables (£29 & £40) and the sound is still there.. I've also changed the players (was a Toshiba) .. no change. I can't change my TV as it's a year or so old..

Am I stuck with not being able to use the HDMI because its a 'faulty' or incompatible standard?

I'll be trying to force the audio down the Digital / Coaxial channel, but I'm not convinced my LG can select that specifically...

Anyone else have / had this issue?
