Anyone clever know where the time stamp on an email get picked up from ?

I'm more interested in web based mail eg sent via yahoo.com or hotmail.com accounts ? Do they get a time sent from the local pc or from somewhere else ?

Been looking at the headers of an email and its time stamp is -8.00 (so some where in the States ) yet the person is claiming to be else where !

It is normally where the email server is located -- so from Yahoo the header will probably be GMT - 8 (i.e. in California)

Steve's right. You might have more luck tracing the x-originatingIP header.

GMT / BST have an effect on the timestamps too, starting with the originating client (as we found out with a very large firm of solicitors) but also the server time is important and included in the headers too
