XP and W98se ICS problem
#1
Main PC running XP, connected to net (waiting for ADSL )
Second PC networked through hub, running W98 SE
Major problems getting the ICS to work.
Can share files/folders.
Client computer can even dial via host PC, establish a connection, but can not get onto the net.
Yet still unable to share internet connection. XP - main/host computer has no problems viewing/using the net.
Help please
Thanks

Are you running a firewall? I have XP running as my internet server, with j.r-xrs' XP machine and my win 98SE machine running through ICS. Zonealarm is a little fiddly to set up, but it sounds like it's your problem.

Dave,
You gave up with 98 then? I thought you had that on both machines? I assume that you installed Norton Firewall 2002 on both machines? Do you have 1 or 2 network cards in the XP/routing machine?
What network have you setup these two machines to be using? I suspect that what's happened is that you've got the Firewall running on both machines and this is causing the problem?
So, assuming that, this is how you fix it:
1. Let's say your two machines are on 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 (192.168.0.0 is a good network to use as it's private and can't be routed over the internet).
2. Setup a new Firewall rule in Norton from the Internet Security section, Advanced, Firewall. Click Add (give the rule a name like Internal LAN TCP/UDP), Action Permit, Direction either, Protocol TCP or UDP. In the Address Tab, select Address Range Radio Button and select the first address as 192.168.1.1 and the Last Address as 192.168.1.254.
3. Do the same again (but this time call it something like Internal LAN ICMP), Action Permit, Direction either, Protocol ICMP. In the Address Tab, select Address Range Radio Button again and select the first address as 192.168.1.1 and the Last Address as 192.168.1.254.
4. The rules will be somewhere near the bottom of the rules list. Click on each one in turn and move it all the way to the top. Both the Internal LAN rules should now be at the top.
5. Do this on the other machine and then you should be able to ping each other. Once you can ping each other, you should be able to look at folders on each other's machines.
If it still doesn't work then it's something to do with the ICS part of XP. I can always pop round and have a look for you if you like.....
Cheers,
Matt.

I did think of the firewall. I am running Norton Firewall 2002 on the XP machine. Problem still exists even with firewall turned off.

PS - Matt, gave up trying to put W98SE on my machine, the SCSI card isn't supported.
