Should I buy a PS3 or a 360?
#5
to sum it up:
Xbox360:
1. Best selection of games
2. Best price
3. Some models have built in HDMI, cheaper models don't
PS3:
1. Better reliability, but not perfect
2. Better features (eg. integral Blue-Ray hi-def movie player)
3. Free internet play against friends (Xbox360 needs subscription)
4. Built in HDMI socket for HD Televisions
No matter what you hear, performance seems to be tied, although the PS3 would appear to have slighly more up it's sleeve, which we won't see for a year or two *allegedly*
If it was me (and I don't own either) at this moment in time I'd go for the XBox360, based purely on the larger catalogue of games available.

OK, I'll give you my perspective (and the fact I recently bought a PS3) but was close to buying a 360 elite. I was and have always been a Sony fanboy. That said when the PS3 was announced I thought, "so what?". I loved playing GT1 & 2 on my PS1 and GT3 on my PS2. I bought one of the 'full fat' PS2s and was lucky enough to get one on launch day but after three months sold it. I later bought a slimline PS2 bundled with GT4 and got back into it again.
But GT4 got tiring and with the PS3 and the impending GT5 I just kept thinking yes its the same game but just looks better but what else? So I had no interest in buying a PS3 whatsoever. Then last xmas, again a pre-order I placed for a Wii but was told I wouldnt get for xmas changed and all of sudden I had a Wii in time for xmas. What an amazing machine and what fun in a social situation and so for many months I didnt even consider a 360 or a PS3. Then I got the chance to play Forza 2 and I was thinking o my god this is amazing, I want one of these. I had been seriously underwhelmed by halo on the original xbox and pgr4 on the 360 but this game was something else. I still had no interest in the PS3 (despite a large PS2 game collection) until I went round friends house (a previous PC gamer and non previous console owner) who had a PS3 and having spent some time with him made me realise that a PS3 was for me.
Why, well out of the box it supports DLNA which means it can stream audio from a NAS or PC running DLNA server (to be fair I think the 360 maybe able to do this). Blu-ray, ok the HD-DVD/BR argument hasnt been settled but one has 30gb capacity and one had 50gb, if you take a feature film, and the fact that most film studios want more bang for buck by bundling extras on a disc the simple fact is blu-ray has more capacity.
Additional OS support (geek mode and anorak on), I can install either fedora/yellow dog/ubuntu linux and put a whole host of emulators on the box and play em.
I wanted PS2 compatibility so needed to move fast as the 60gb models with this are quickly being phased out. Thats what pushed me to buy one!

At least 3 of you are saying buy a ps3 for bluray, the 360 HD drive is around £60 if you shop around and supports interactive features, picture/sound quality is the same, don't try and justify your ps3 for movie reasons
Speccy, i think all 360's now have HDMI, the basic now comes with hdmi, wireless controller, 5 free arcade games and forza or halo if you shop around.

360
Don't justify the huge black brick on the back of the blu Ray player. you have a CHOICE with the 360 whether you go for an HD movie format or not and your not having it forced on you. HD DVD may have been in second place for a long time now but with cost reductions in players it has seen a huge boost.
As for games you only need to look at assasins creed comparison video to see that the 360 version looks better IMHO

When you add all the options, the two machines cost roughly the same (with the 360 giving you the option of not having things you don't want - wireless and blu-ray for example). Who cares anyway. The chap asking said that price wasn't a factor.
For a games machine, there is only one choice at the moment. The one with some games

What Iain says
Basically, the 360 has a massive games catalogue (compared to the PS3) and arguably much better online play integration (the subscription is a small price to pay for it).
You could just buy a PS3 and join most of the users saying "ohh you wait till GT5 comes out...."
Buy a 360 now and save for a PS3 when there's some exclusive games that warrant buying one in the future.

Got to be the PS3, not bought one yet but when I get my new sony LCD next month it comes with one. The new 360 elite is black but the add on HD player is white? not a biggy but if like me you like to keep things neat and tidy in your living room it just look's wrong, the 360 HD player is not a great piece of kit and was not rated by "what LCD/HIFI" etc. Ok there are not many games for the ps3 yet but how many do you need? a lot of the 360 games are very poor anyway. There are only a few very good titles, more than the ps3 I know but they will start to filter through on the run up to xmas I think.

Interesting that Sony have cut the price of the SDK - what I can't understand is why they charged so much for it in the first place if they wanted attract more games developers.
In answer to the original question if you want a bigger choice of games and are prepared for the risk of a faulty console, go for the 360. Personally I'd upgrade the PC but then again I mainly play first person shooters.

Have all 3 consoles. Wii, PS3 & 360. And to be perfectly honest, I use the 360 90% of the time followed by the wii 8% and 2% the PS3. Why I hear you say? Well a lot of my mates have 360's, and with the headphone and microphone you get as standard is a good thing. Especially when your taking the rip out of each other on brilliant games such as Rainbow 6, COD4 and PGR3 &4. The probelm with the PS3 is the games are more expensive. And I couldn't get a bluetooth headset working with games such as Resistance Fall of man and Motorstorm. Therefore it lost it's appeal. Now playing Ratchet and Klank on the PS3. The wii is good for a bit of exercise such as Wii sports.

Liking the posts guys! Thanks!
Does anyone know if GTA4 and GT5 will be PS3 exclusive for a while, or just a week or two before the 360 gets 'em?
Also, I have an HD DVD player already, so that's another positive for the PS3.....
I like Neanderthals thinking of just buying both!

Depends what you're looking for really, got 2 360's and a PS3 so here's my opinions...
360 has by far the largest games selection and you can get tons off ebay for under a tenner, cheapest you'll find PS3 games is £20 if you're lucky. Ps3 is starting to pick up now, Resistance & Motorstorm are both very good and the latest Ratchet & Clank is now out, and games like Asassins Creed, Orange Box & Call of Duty 4 are getting format wide release dates. And some of the best the 360 has to offer is also there like Oblivion & Rainbow 6 Vegas, there's also rumours that Bioshock is on its way next year.
Live! rocks - PS3's online ability is pretty limited at present but expect that to change in Q1 2008 when Home gets up and running - I still doubt it'll be anywhere near Live for ages after that though. The 360 does upscale DVD's but only through VGA or HDMI, of the films I've watched on it - its not that great - I always use the PS3 now.
For movies - disregarding the HD format war, PS3 is an ashtonishing peice of kit, upscaled DVD's look brilliant, Blu-ray even better but a lot does depend on the transfer - Casino Royale is fantasic whereas Black Hawk Down has a few dodgy moments, but still looks good. Can't comment on the HD DVD stuff as my feet are firmly in the BR camp.
Build Quality - PS3 by a country mile, but my Elite 360 seems to have been bolted together a bit better than the Premium, although I think it looks better in white personally... Onto my 3rd Premium, but only had the Elite for a week so will just have to see how that goes.
If you plump for the 360, go for the Elite.
GT5 is PS3 only, the demo's of it are jaw-dropping, Polyphony have said that the two must haves are 1080p & 60FPS, as when you're realling caning it you need to see whats coming in as much detail as possible...
