Hi All,
Just re-installed the pc with ME, having broadband in next week and had to get rid of XP.
I'm trying to get the updates from Microsofts site and also install IE6. I get as far as starting to download but the the site jumps back to the unable to download screen.
Is there a problem with the site or is it just me?
Cheers
Lee

Yeah,
I'm curious too, why chuck out a real 32 bit memory managed operating system with a proper security model for what is basically 15 year old DOS behind the scenes. I know you must have a reason so tell us - I'm just nosey that's all.
Regards,
tiggers.

So do other broadband providers not work with XP either?
That has just p**sed on my chips, cos I was looking to get NTL broadband as I already have cable TV/phone with them.Bugger!

Broadband works with XP!
It just means that most of the Cable Co's staff who come out to your house are not trained on it (are they trained at all? )
My main Machine at home runs XP and my connection to the web is via a NIC to the Cable Modem.

Steve,
Iain's right. I had XP running with my TW broadband connection with no problems. If your PC has a NIC, then it doesn't matter what OS your running - MS Windows, Linux, Mac - anything that supports DHCP.
It's just that they'll send some bloke with minimal PC skills round to install the thing.
When he arrives, tell him he'll need to install a NIC and configure your Linux PC for you - that'll soon get him going

Yeah agreed, NTL works with XP just fine. According to NTL it won't woek with Linux, but mine is working just fine connected to a Linux firewall. It's not a question of technology, simply the knowledge of the helpdesk staff/engineers.
Regards,
tiggers.
P.S. If you do use it with XP make sure you use a good firewall. I won't go into details, but XP does have some issues reagrding administrative privs and open sockets etc.

Steve,
normally it is a pci card that sits inside the pc. You have to open the pc up to install the card. You can get USB versions, IMO I hate these but will be a lot easier for you to install. Just make sure its XP compatible. You can pick a network card up for around £20, that for an average one. XP will detect most makes of cards with the built in drivers. Good names to look out for are 3Com, Intel etc... there are loads.... The choice as they say is yours...

Just a bit more info,
Broadband is now in and working. NTL say there are currently no XP drivers for the Terayon modem when used with USB.
You may get away with XP and a NIC but NTL don't recommend this and help line will not support it.
NTL installer is just a point installer, he checks the cable link to the modem and does not touch you PC. An idiots guide is provided and your are expected to install the modem and register the service.
Cheers

NTL now supply Terayon modems with USB support.
They do have a 10 baseT connection so should in theory still work with a NIC and XP but not yet with USB and XP.

I have a Terayon cable modem with NTL and it's worked fine with XP home and XP pro on my PC. I just put the supplied driver CD in the driver the first time I plugged it into the usb port and it chose and installed the drivers and worked ok.
Until I read this thread I didn't even know there was an issue with XP and NTL?
My advice would be to try it and see.
