Question X Box Elite/PS3/WII

My 7 year old son wants father Christmas to source out one of the above, but he doesnt know which one???
What are the Pros and cons of each, reliablity/game play /graphics etc.
I know this is pretty vague but any help would be appreciated

For a 7yr old got to be the Wii surely! Different sort of games.

Do you want him to blow up aliens and run around the house shouting im gonna shoot you in the face or pretend to make cakes and play tennis or blow up balloons.... (xbox/ps3 former - Wii later)

Good luck finding a Wii the near you get to Xmas though, get shopping now!

Reliability - The Xboxs are suffering badly from a lack of this. Not read much anti-ps3 press other than lack of games. Can't comment, never really played one other than in PCWorld once.

My opinion without getting into too much detail/debate . . .

PS3 - Best technically, current lack of titles lets it down at the moment.

Xbox360 - Best range of games by far, has a few reliablity problems which are now vastly improved. Shines with its online capabilites.

Wii - Best for the social/family games player. Good range of games for the whole family and those who wouldn't normally play them. Great fun.

For a 7 year old, I would say the Wii, without question.

Why? My nephew (6 years old) loves the 360. He's got loads of games and can even beat me on a few of them He did try my Wii, but didn't like it (thought it was boring)...

I've only got a Wii so can't comment on the others. I've got Red Steel, Zelda, Resident Evil, Trauma Center and Super Paper Mario. So quite a mix of games there. He'll have great fun wether hes playing puzzle or platform and shoot em games. Plus the controls involve you a lot more and add to the fun.

The other two have some good games too!

I hope by "boring" you don't mean he'd prefer to be playing something like Grand Theft Auto?

My 6 year old nephew isn't allowed anywhere near video games yet.

My 7 year old daughter plays with the 360 occasionally and we have a Wii that Santa will bring but she REALLY likes her Nintendo DS and plays Mama's cooking, Tamagotchi and Dogs and the newly discovered Hannah Montana.

Would have thought that the majority of the Xbox Live arcade would be suitable for a 7 yr old, as well as the retail games Iain has mentioned.

And how many 6 yr olds are likely to go out and buy GTA with their own money?

If you dont want him becoming a bloater buy him a wii

Tennis and boxing will have him leaping around the room. Otherwise he will be a couch potato!

Utter rubbish. The solution to the couch potato problem is good parenting, not getting a console to do it for you

Just make sure there's nothing valuable within breaking distance.

Because the control method is going to be far easier for the average 7 year old, and the content is going to be far more suitable.

The 360 "Fall" update when it finally arrives is alledged to contain parenting limits so you can set the number of hours per week/day your kids can play.

Albeit when the console switches off due to the time, they'll probably start to kick the **** out of it in frustration.

I disagree with that completely. My nephew has no trouble handling all the controls on the 360 gamepad, and he can certainly control it better than my parents

As for content, there are plenty of suitable games available, (probably more than there are on the Wii at the moment).

The control methods for most 360 games are by default complex. Much too complex for the average 7 year old. Sure , he will ge tby on some games, but a huge portion of the best 360 games will be completely closed off to him.

Your experiences with your 7 year old nephew is completely anecdotal, Wii is much, much more accesible to someone of that age group.

If you are going to go down the traditional console route, then you are far bette roff going down the PS2 route rather than 360, if he is around 7 - infinitely more game choice, and cheaper all round.

At least with Parent control it's

Parent - 'Right turn that of now it's time for home work'

Child - 'Ok i'll just save my game'

With 360

Child - MUM!!!!, it's just switched off and i've lost my progress, i'll have to start from the beginning.

[Child now sulks and won't do home work]

Not too bad - just means that every game now has a time trial challenge...

I'm more worried about the wife finding out about it and limiting me from my gaming fix.

Are the UK Xbox Elite/premium/core consoles runing with the new (more reliable?) chip yet? What's the codename to look out for on the packaging?

Its name is Falcon but I dont think there's anything on the box to let you know this - but I think the Falcon chips are currently limited to the Elite units.

Any console produced since 1st July should have to new daughterboard heat sink.

How to find a Falcon model 360 in stores

Based on the info in this thread, A Falcon model Xbox 360 MUST BE:

1. Lot #0734 (Halo 3) or later (all SKUs)
2. Manufactured on or after 8/24/07(An HDMI Premium manufactured on 8/19 has been reported as 65nm.)
3. Team FDOU (Other teams may be Falcon as well, but none have been reported)

Please note that getting a Falcon console is not guaranteed even if everything matches the above information. Only some new consoles are Falcon, and no Falcon refurb consoles have been reported.

How to find Lot and Team info:
There is a white sticker on the side of the box with the lot # and team. In order to find the manufacturing date without opening the box, there is a flap on the side of the box that allows you to peek inside and see the manufacturing date on the console itself.

Xbox.com

Some new HDMI premiums and Halo editions have been reported with 65nm chips.
