Steve, there are a few solutions on ebay and they're not that costly tbh.

We use one of these... Find £299 +VAT Time recorder clocking in clock machine on eBay within, Other Office Eqpt Supplies, Office Equipment Supplies, Business, Office Industrial (end time 28-Oct-07 14:30:00 GMT)

Cheers Simon & Bob

Blick is maximum of 50 users, we have spoke to them and they have passed on some details of another system

I did find another system too that looked pretty decent, but cant remember the name off the top of my head, and the details are on my work PC

Began with A i think

The only problem with ebay is that it isnt for us, it is for one of our customers, so prefer not to use ebay, but will take a look at it, and see if we can speak to the suppliers

We use a system called Tensor Time and Attendance & Access Control through Smart Cards & Biometrics - Tensor plc

Not used many of the features myself but it is PC based and worth a look.
