I was cleaning spyware off a friend's pcs yesterday. 1 of the XP Pro computers had a warning on boot that the OS was not genuine. I've not seen this before, how do I fix this? Do I have to reformat, or can I install an OEM XP over the top?

A re-install asks for a serial number, so it might be worth a try if you have a genuine version.

Happy to buy a genuine version, but I don't know if an OEM will install over the top. I *think* it will, but I'm not certain.

RockXP will allow you to change XP serial numbers on the fly BUT must be a like-for-like version (corporate over corporate, home over home, pro over pro etc.)

Change the Serial in Windows XP

So buy a new licence to match the existing build, then change it. Might save you having to reinstall, although a clean install is best for cleaning out all the cobwebs

be careful though as it could be a pre release version so a new license may not work even if it is for the same version if you know what I mean
