Default wifi question

anybody have any tips on boosting the signal i live in a large house and the router is a fair distance away from my pc.can you buy bigger aerials and so forth

Don't know about boosting the wifi signal, but how about this;

You can buy a bigger aerial, play with the channel setting and position the router somewhere else.

i'm a bit of a novice to this wifi so no idea how to play with the channels

Have a look in the router config - there will be a setting for a channel number. Default is often 6. Sometimes the wireless router can pick up interference and changing the channel (which alters the broadcast frequency) can solve this.

If not have a look at the latest Netgear routers that use some clever variable signal scanning - I found this was much better in my old house (town house with 2 lots of floors) - it is very good at eliminating dead spots.

I'm having similar issues - is it as simple as buying a bigger more industrial router? e.g. a draytek vigor or something?
