Can it, when set to static, ping the dhcp server? Could it be the DHCP server is only giving out addresses to specific MAC addreses and this machine isn't in the list, so it does not get one?

When you renew it does it jump to 0's and then 169 ?
When you renew the failed IP do you get an error message... unable to contact DHCP or something ?
Could try resetting TCP/IP and Winsock just to make sure..

all interesting points to look at, cant get to the laptop to see nor do they know much either so collecting a number of options to try.
it had a static ip address so it would work on home network or something
when its in the office wireless is off then set to automatic, yes giving 0. then 169.

hmmmm
So it connects in the office... meaning it could be either the wireless on the PC or the router !
hmmmmm
All I can think of is make sure DHCP is on on the router and as said before the MAC protection is off.
