Unhappy TV problem

Okay, so this isn't a computer problem, but I'm hoping to get some advice anyway... :-)

My 7 year old 28'' JVC widescreen TV has started playing up and since I don't want to upgrade to LCD/plasma yet, I'm wondering if it's worth getting it repaired.

So can anyone advise what the cause of the problem might be?

When I turn it on, the picture doesn't usually come up - there are rainbow-effect colours at the edge of the screen and the rest is a blue/grey colour.
Sometimes, you can see the 'top' of the picture at the bottom of the screen.

I can usually get the picture to come on eventually (after hitting it a few times), but the problem is happening more and more frequently. After switching the TV on initially, the TV also intermittently switches off, but once warmed up, it's fine.

Definitely not upgrading yet, so I'm just looking for ideas about the cause and possibility of repair.
Thanks.

It sounds fooked, just trawl Ebay for another cheap CRT or perhaps one of those second user tv places, ex rental etc, or just ask around, loads of people upgrading so there are thousands of unwanted CRT's around for free or very cheap, a lot of people just want it out of the way, many get tipped even though they work fine and cost 2 grand 5 years ago.

I have a 28 inch Goodmans my mate gave me for my garden cabin.

Sounds like the tube is on its way out - Which means a new TV.

Thanks for the feedback. I fear you may be right about the tube.

It's a shame, because it's always been a really good TV. I guess that in <the old days>, it would have been much cheaper to get it repaired, but when you can get a bigger LCD TV for only a few hundred pounds more, what's the point?

More electronic waste...

It might not be the tube, if the picture is shown at the bottom as you say it could be a component/circuit board failure which can be easily fixed/replaced by any repair shop for about 60notes.

A repair is generally about £50.

Call a guy out of the paper, describe the fault and get a quote on the phone.
