Wink

Hello techno people

I'd like to increase my internet connection speed at home with the minimum of fuss and expense.

I currently connect through AOL using a 56k internal modem. This is a total pain in the *** if i am downloading mpegs. For example a guy posted a short video of himself doing doughnuts in the snow in his scoob. The file was only 0.5mbs and took nearly 10 minutes to download

Any easy suggestions greatfully recieved

Cheers

Mikey

Hello,

I use Telewest Broadband aka Blueyonder, for just £25 a month it's outstanding. Make the net a joy to use

Two options Mikey.

ADSL. Offered by many ISPs, although the underlying service is provided by BT Ignite.

http://www.btopenworld.com/broadband/linecheck/ will tell you if your exchange is ADSL enabled. You can go to BT OpenWorld or try Nildram, Demon, Freeserve, Zen etc

http://info.blueyonder.co.uk/promo/m...91010405304154 is another alternative.

2 Options really :-

1 use a better ISP on your 56k Modem

2 go for a 'broadband' connection. I too use Telewest and i'm more than happy with it for £25 a month!

56k modems are just cack, if you want speed then go broadband.

Try Easynet, I pay just over £120 a month for a 2 meg connection and 13 static IP's so for a 512k it should be peanuts!

Dunno what the cheapest out there is but the above post sound good!

I've had a couple of problems with pop3 on BTOW, but never failed to connect and always able to surf.

BTOW is fine IMO.

Cool

Yes, having moaned previously about BTOpenworld, I must now in their defence say they refunded my connection charge like they said they would and the service is fine, including game pings in CS.

Openworld made a monumental **** of installing our ADSL (cut off phone lines to the whole street!) but now it is in and working it is excellent and faultless.

Cheapest is Telewests Broadband or NTL's broadband at £25 a month, good performance and reliability.

Ditching AOL would probably help too, but not by a huge amount.

However, if 0.5Mb took 10 mins to download, it was probably due to the server you were downloading from being either saturated or having a slow connection. On a normal 56k dial-up (even through AOHell) you should see 0.5Mb come down in around 2 - 2.5 minutes. On NTL broadband I would expect to see it in less than 8 secs.

Edited due to fat fingers

Talking

Mikey,

Two choices in our area

Cable - If NTL have done your street then you can sign up with them. Cheaper than ADSL. see :-http://www.ntl.com/locales/gb/en/home/broadband/pricing/pricing.asp

ADSL - Needs a BT phone line. Lots of ISP but they all use bt ignite as wholesale provide. Check www.adslguide.org for more. But do not use bt openworld (aka bt openwoe)

PS had ADSL installed a 4/12 ish .... you'll never look back ! paid £82 for installation and then £39.99 a month but no phone charges and always on.

Ring me if you wanna chat about it !

Dave
