Yesterday,I upgraded my home machine from a Duron 700 to an Athlon 1.1ghz.All is running well but I'm curious to find out if the CPU temperature that my chipset monitor reports is above normal.Once the machine has been on for say,an hour, the temperature of the CPU hovers between 50-52 degrees celcius.Anyone else out there tell me their average temperatures?
I've done various searches on the AMD website but can't find any tech docs with average operating temperatures.............
The CPU now has a bloody big heatsink and fan and I also fitted an exhaust fan to my case to suck out the warm air....
Not very often I ask for help in this forum but there's always a first time for everything uh?

Thanks in advance!

Nick

What motherboard do you have installed?

I understand that the Athlon can have a normal operating temperature of anything up to 55-60 degrees before you shouold start worrying about extra cooling.

You can't go wrong with good case ventilation and a nice heatsink/fan combination.

FYI: my current CPU temperature is 38 degrees celcius, and its been on all day. I have an Epox 8kt3a+ mainboard, with an Athlon XP1700 CPU. The only cooling (that's switched on at the moment) I have is a Silverado CPU cooler.

Thanks for the answers guys....
My mobo is an Abit KT7 (Can't believe I didn't pay the little bit extra and buy the raid version ) and just checkin the temp now (The machine has been switched on for around 4 hours now!!!) it's peakin at 53 deg c.
Think I'm gonna have a look at reducing the clutter inside my case cos I have a scsi card (For my dat drive) plus the usual IDE cables and will start with replacing the standard ide cables with the rounded cables me thinks to aid airflow inside the case.Any other suggestions gratefully received?

Cheers,

Nick..

Cool

If it runs stable it will be OK, When they get too hot, they start falling over.

Don't want to scare you too much, but take a look at this file. It shows you what happens to a Mainboard and/or Processor when thermal shutdown occurs.

(its about 9.5 megs in size, and to download you may have to right-click and "save target as...")

Here are the results that I get at home:

Old Machine:
Abit KT7A-Raid Motherboard
Athlon 'Axia'1Ghz(7.5x133)@1.4Ghz(10.5x133)
Lapped Thermalright SK6 Heatsink with Delta 'Screamer' fan
Case temp=23c
CPU on Idle=39c
CPU full Load=43c

Server:
Tyan Tiger MP Motherboard, SCSI160 all round
2xAthlon 1.4Ghz
2xLapped TaiSol CGK760092 Heatsink with 26CFM fans fitted
Case Temp=26c
CPU Idle/normal server duties(UT,Quake3,SS2)=43c

My new machine built yesterday:
Epox 8KHA+ Motherboard
Athlon XP 1900 (unlocked by me but running stock as a '1900' 1.6Ghz)
Zalman Flower CNPS6000-cu Heatsink with standard 92MM hover-mount fan
Case Temp=25c
CPU Idle=38c
CPU Full Load=44c

Got a 120mm fan on order and focusing the flow a tad on it, so will drop approx 3c on the Zalman, then up her to a XP2000 and a bit more hopefully

Arctic SilverII thermal compound used on the above.

Cheers,

Nick

Edited to put in Mobo details as asked above.....
