I've just moved to VM and I get terrible fluctuations.

I find a reboot (unplug and reboot) of the router helps.

I'll be leaving VM as soon as my contract is up thought (in 10 months )

I got 1400kbs using this test

Using this one though I get 7500 kbs thinkbroadband :: Tools

Using usenet I tend to get 7mbs so reckon the latter is more accurate

im with virgin media...

basically the 4pm-midnight thing is a deliberate thing on their part i believe.

i got a thing in the post which said if i go over a "fair limit" downloads wise in a certain amount of time, then from 4pm- around midnight, they dont stop you downloading, but half your speed or something, for basically taking the **** on the un-limited download policy they have.

heres my results for a simple 2 meg connection in scunny via v.m.

im happy with that

On speedtest, I've never had it above 7 from any computer despite having 10 and 20 meg connections.

That other one gives 17 which does seem more accurate when compared to news access speeds.

Is it not driven by BT phoneline - ie if your phoneline/telephone exchange has not yet been updated then whatever speed you are paying for, regardless of the provider you will be restricted by BT.

I'm with AOL (Silver). As they have twice updated, and with "up to" 8mb soon to be available, mine is still running at .5mb

yeah, trust me, bt are crap. i was paying for a supposed 2.0mb line and was recieving 0.2mb connection for months. dozens of calls, engineers out etc. they tried charging me £300 for a quarterly internet and phone bill due to these charges.

i got through to the indian guy of fonejacker, with his pre-written script. had one of my own with choice words, and lets say, the charges were reversed, i told them to stick their internet (moved to virgin media) and im now currently in cred for a couple hundred quid. and all i have now is a £11.50 landline per month lol.

bunch of useless tossers. worst customer service in the world.

virgin media - spot on. really helpful. english speaking help, always get through quickly, even helped out recently when my mortgage payments buggered up, and i couldnt pay the direct debit for a couple weeks.

brilliant... (watch this space - ive cursed myself )

My virgin ADSL is shockingly poor as well.

At times i dont even get .4mb - I just get page cannot be displayed!, that works out to 0.0mb per sec!

Its is so shockingly **** I'm past caring & ranting about it. I've posted on here about it before but without the search I can't find it.

There is a user on here - Pimmo2000 - who works for Virgin Media - he said they concentrate on their newly aquired Cable Users - and that the ADSL service is **** - if their own employees say that that what hope do we have....

guys, All you on ADSL I found one thing that made a massive change to my speeds. the phone socket has wires connected that don't need to be and all they serve to do is add interference (noise) to the phone line which effects the speeds. connect via the main socket and have microfilters on all sockets.

details here.

Mine speed double initially from 0.5 meg to 1 meg then slowly went up with use over a few days. Peaked at 2.5Meg (My line syncs at 2800Kb) and is now a solid 2 meg. Not great for an 8 meg line but with my distance from the exchange it's far better than what I was getting.

Well worth doing. took me 2 mins. very easy to do.

This is true, however i'm downloading nothing so nowhere near hitting the limits and still only getting around 5meg at best, supposed to be 20meg.

Do as I've posted above. That's exactly the speed I was getting. use the main socket, microfilter on every socket and remove those wires.
