AMD® Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+
Is this processor any good by todays standards? Think its last years technology. Also with it being 64bit will it run 32 bit Windows?
Currently got an Intel P4 2.4 so what percentage in perfomance increase would moving up to the amd chip give? I think its a dual core 2.4ghz so is it twice as powerful as a P4 2.4 because its dual core?
I have no idea of processors after P4, seemed like a new one was out every week and didn't bother keeping track of what was what, laptops are even worse!

I went from a P4 2.4 to an X2 4200 and there was a considerable performance improvement. Like you say, the only way to utilise the 64-bit addressing is to use a 64-bit operating system and applications. There are very few bits of software which properly utilise dual cores as yet.

Basically is this a reasonable spec for £352?

Needs DDR2 at 800 Mhz to use CPU fully,
I went for a 6000 (3 Ghz) at £150 but doesn't like to overclock .
My old 4200+ went up to 3 Ghz no problem and are so cheap now....
P.S. beware low performance graphics cards with Vista, but only needed for games, I'm not that bothered.
Dunx.

My work just payed £399 for a Dell PC with the same Athlon X2 processor, 2GB Ram, flatscreen monitor, etc... Great price really.
Its amazing what £399 can buy you these days.

And I remember paying £1,495 for my i486 DX2 50Hz, 16MB Ram and Tseng Labs SVGA card. Not to mention my Roland LAPC-1 sound card (essential for Sierra games like Codename IceMan)
