Where are my recycle items ?

Where are my recycle items ?
Whenever I delete items on my PC, I get the message "do you really want to ....." blah blah but when I go to my recycle bin, nothing there.
Any ideas where these deleted items are going ? Its almost like there is a setting in the bin that deletes them as they pop in, but can't seem to see the setting anywhere to stop it.

Yep, if you need them back take a look at this free tool, very rarely is stuff permanently deleted so to speak
Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File Recovery - Home
loads more out there, but that's a start
