Angry Vista problem

I can't boot to desktop in Vista. PC startsup as normal I see the logon box, I see the Welcome 'circle' then the HDD works a bit, n it drops to a black screen just with the cursor. Nothing seems to happen after that.

Now if I then CTRL-ALT-DEL and logoff and then logon again, it works fine and my desktop, settings, etc and everything work fine and as expected.

Any ideas? Can't find anything similar on google.

Looks like I will have to do a repair from the DVD, as I don't have any system restore points

Have you installed anything recently, and this became apparent immediately afterwards? drivers, software etc?

Have you tried booting to safe mode? Does it work?

If so boot into safe mode and try un-installing whatever it was you last installed. Or use msconfig to stop it being loaded.

Yea safemode works fine. I cant for the life of me see what could be causing it though. I think its a service but not sure.

Also if I create a new user, n logon with that on a restart it works fine.

Well unless you find out what it is that's been installed, along with whatever services that might be causing it you're pretty much knackered.. only thing I can suggest is to create a new profile for yourself.

Or you could just start removing stuff (or disabling in msconfig) bit by bit (trying to work backwards from stuff you installed latest), and you might strike lucky.

Fixed it Stupid leadtek service for my tv card was causing it. Although if I load the offending app/service manually it works fine after its booted.
