I'm in the process of starting my own web based business and want my shop to appear in google searches etc:

Whats the fastest way to get into google and does anyone have any tips on staying high in the rankings.

I have submitted my URL directly to google but it appears I nbeed to do more.

Getting onto google can take a while, especially if you submit the site through the google site. A quicker way to get there is to have someone you know who is already on google link to your site as the google bot will follow site links on the website. Even then it could take 3 months depending on when the site was last indexed.

Try adding a site map (XML)

Try and get a link on other sites that are popular / well ranked. You site will get spidered soon enough, I did the above and the new site was spidered with a few days. No guarantees though...
