Default BE Broadband

Anyone using their service on an unbundled exchange? Up to 24mb sounds great.

Yep, I'm on BE and about 700 metres from the exchange.

Due to contention and overheads I reckon I'm running at 15mbits or there abouts

Reckon I'll be 3k or so from the exchange. On BT they promise 512k so with Be hoping for 2-3 mb which would be acceptable.

Hello

I switched from what I think of as the best ISP (Zen) to BE* for the possibility of getting 24mb.

I am happy with the result, BUT they sent a faulty modem to start with and messed up my order. I had to get the head of support to send me a new modem and get my order right. On average I get about 18mb, and the speedtest I ran just now gave me:

So, if it works it is great. If you need customer support, God help you.

I see they supply a wirless modem. Is it possible to use your own?

This website gives a comparison between expected adsl & adsl2+ performance depending upon line length (attenuation).

So I may not see anything quicker. There is a new exchange coming on line less than half a Km away imminently so Be will be considerably faster then.

It is quite unreliable with quite a lot of ADSL2+ modems (apparently from reading ADSLGUIDE and the Be* Forums). I really didn't like the Be*Box and bought a Netgear 834N instead. That works fine.

Hmmm not sure what to do then. Moving into non cable area and must have BB for working at home! Probably be safer to sign up with BT to ensure I get a service from day 1 and then change in 12 months once the contract is up. The problem is compounded by a new exchange due to come on line servicing the new house.

Why not sign up with Zen? One month rolling contract and superb service.

I'm not sure BE would even sign you up as your 3KM from the exchange. I'm with BE and get about 7mb down and 1.3mb up (2.4km from exchange). If you want a fast upload speed I don't know of any ISP's which will give you the same.

I know nothing at all about ADSL, but BE there moved me to ADSL2+ ?? the + being the better thing apparently, but I still only get 7mb on my 24mb line.. guess I'm too far from exchange, I do get 1.3 upload though, which rocks!

Everything hinges on the new exchange and whether BE are in there. If they are that will be great as I will be less than 0.5k away from it.

i dont fully understand why you would need a high upload speed? is it just for torrents where as i understand the more you upload the more you download

BE seems to be on a monthly rollback, now set to the end of june before i can get it

that was an open question. People seem to think having a higher upload was better and i was wondering why.

Ah I see, my apologies. Higher upload really for either torrenting or sending files over ftp for example. Must admit not the be all and end all for me.

If you send emails with large attachments or FTP large files from one place to another then the higher the upload speed the better.

Not SO useful for torrents, as you can just leave them active for a long while if you want to maintain your ratio on certain resticted sites*.

*Allegedly.
